Volleyball drops match at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wofford volleyball team capped off its two-match road swing at conference-leading Samford on Saturday, falling to the Bulldogs in four sets (20-25, 25-23, 13-25, 18-25).

With the loss, the Terriers drop to 11-13 overall, sitting at 4-6 in conference play. Samford improves to 16-5 overall and a strong 10-1 Southern Conference record, keeping them in first place in the league.

Riley Coonan led the Wofford attack with 10 kills while Chasidy Sharped notched a career-high 17 digs. As a team, the Terriers hit just .091, totaling 35 kills for the match.

Samford jumped ahead to start the match, but Wofford was able to keep the set close, tying the score at 14 apiece after Kennedy Smith sent home a kill. After the Bulldogs took a four-point advantage, errors and a kill from Cronister found the two sides tied at 20-20. Samford would take a timeout, however, recording the next five points to jump ahead 1-0.

Looking to even the match, Wofford came out swinging in the second, as kills from Riley Coonan and Emily Hubbard made the score 7-4 in favor of the Terriers. Samford rallied to tie the set three times before pulling ahead 16-15. Wofford responded this time, winning five of the next seven points. With the score 22-20, the Bulldogs won the next two points to knot the set up, but a pair of kills from Bella Zeman evened the match 1-1.

After the two sides traded points early, Samford won 9-of-10 points to take a 14-5 lead. The Terriers could not close the gap to, dropping the set 25-13. Set four began like the third, with Samford grabbing a 10-6 lead out of the gates. Wofford rallied and made the deficit just two after Smith recorded and ace. The Bulldogs extended pushed the lead five, but the Terriers charged back and forced a Samford timeout after a kill from Coonan and an ace from Emily Durham cut the advantage to just two. The Bulldogs rallied out of the break, taking the last four points to claim the match.
