Volleyball sweeps UNCG with balanced effort

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford volleyball team got back in the win column on Friday night, getting contributions throughout the lineup to sweep UNCG 25-17, 25-19, 25-21.

The win gives the Terriers the season sweep as well, dropping just one set in the two matches. Wofford improves to 12-13 and is now 5-6 in Southern Conference play. The Terriers remain home, welcoming Furman to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Catie Cronister (11), Meghan Yaffa (10) and Riley Coonan (9) led Wofford in kills, while Chasidy Sharpe stepped in and picked up 27 digs. Coonan, who is among the league leaders in attack percentage, boasted a hitting percentage of .533 in the win as Wofford hit .340 as a team.

UNCG opened the match with four straight points before Wofford answered by taking four of the next five. With the Spartans looking to pull away early, three kills from Cronister knotted the set up at 10-10. UNCG regained the lead, but kills from Coonan and Kelly Bossert gave Wofford its first lead just past the midway point of the set. The Terriers salted the set away, winning 7-of-9 points to go ahead 1-0.

In set two, Wofford took a slight lead early but the Spartans would hang around, eventually grabbing a 16-14 lead. Another Wofford rally was on the horizon however, forcing a UNCG timeout after Cronister put the Terriers ahead 22-18. Wofford would claim the set moments later when Lorissa King served up an ace that made the match 2-0.

The third set was all Wofford from the jump, blitzing UNCG to the tune of 10-2. The Spartans hung tough though, cutting the deficit to just one around the midway point of the set (14-13). After an error gave the Terriers the serve back, Claire Meier and Yaffa snatched the momentum with a pair of kills to make the score 18-13. Holding a 24-18 advantage, UNCG made one more run, winning the next three points before a Coonan kill sealed the match.
