Spartanburg, SC – The Wofford women's soccer team defeated VMI in the first round of the SoCon tournament by a score of 2-1.
In a game that was dominated by rain, slush, mud, and plenty of puddles, the Terriers came away with a 2-1 victory to send them to the quarterfinals of the SoCon tournament. VMI's goal was scored by Sierra Brewer, and Wofford's goals were scored by
Allie Cardew and
Cameryn Burke.
With the nonstop rain playing a crucial factor in the pace of play, it was difficult for both sides to make any attempt at goal. The Keydets opened the scoring in the 19
th minute from a long range effort by Sierra Brewer that floated over the head of Wofford goalkeeper,
Maria Mon. Mon stayed strong and came up big during the rest of the match recording 3 saves.
Wofford equaled the score in the 31
st minute after an
Allie Cardew free kick. From 30 yards out, the senior sent a firecracker of a shot at the net which ended up nicking off the crossbar and in. The two teams would head into halftime tied at 1-1.
The rain continued to fall, but that didn't stop VMI and Wofford from going at each other searching for the next goal. A slippery surface, coming together of players for the loose ball, and plenty of wet feet ruled the second half. It would take another set piece for the lead goal to come from.
In the 52
nd minute,
Erin Roche approached the corner receiving instructions from Coach Grant on where to place the ball, and she placed it exactly where it needed to be. Roche found the head of
Cameryn Burke who powered her header past the diving keeper to give the Terriers a 2-1 lead. Wofford would hold strong the rest of the match and ride out to a 2-1 victory.
"I think it was a big change from our normal game plan in that we were not able to possess the ball due to the rain and wetness," said head coach
Emily Grant. "The girls had to switch and they adjusted pretty well for what was asked of them. We went down a goal so I thought we fought through a lot of adversity with the weather and being down a goal to come back and win. I am really proud of them. I am glad we have a few days to rest up and prepare for Furman."
The Terriers will travel to Greenville to take on Furman on November 3 at 2:00 pm. The winner of that game will play the winner of Chattanooga/UNCG on Friday, November 8.
