SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's soccer team forced overtime after a goal from
Austin Tuggle, but saw Longwood score less than three minutes into overtime to give the Lancers a 2-1 victory.
Despite outshooting Longwood by a dozen and possessing the ball 64 percent of the time, all six of the Lancers shots were on frame including the first and last goals of the game. Wofford drops to 2-8 on the season and will travel to Belmont for a matchup against the Bruins on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Wofford came up with the first two chances of the game, but after failing to find the net it was Longwood's Mikel Abando who put the Lancers ahead 1-0 in the 10th minute. The Terriers threatened throughout the first half, forcing a pair of diving saves from Longwood's Jacob Reimers as he looked to keep the clean sheet.
The pressure continued out of the gate in the second, and after
Josh Mackie was denied, Tuggle found the ball near the top of the box and ripped a shot into the top right side of the net to knot the score up at 1-1.
The two sides struggled to take control of the game from here, as chippiness led to cards on each team. Wofford would have a pair of chances in the last few minutes of regulation, but could not convert.
Wofford's
Brandon Oddy created the first chance of overtime, but it would be the only one of the period as Markus Gronli struck a ball from near midfield that floated into the net for the win.
