Madison, WI – Wofford's women's basketball team dropped their contest at Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon, 78-65. Ten Terriers found themselves on the scoresheet with
Chloe Wanink and
Da'Ja Green leading the way with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The 1
st quarter saw Wofford jump out to an early lead after
Cairo Booker and
Jamari McDavid each made a layup. Wisconsin would then go on an 8-0 run, but that didn't stop the Terriers from attacking the basket. A Wanink triple and an
Alexis Tomlin jumper put the Terriers in striking distance at the end of the quarter, down 25-23.
Wofford would take the lead with just under eight minutes to go in the half after McDavid dropped her third bucket of the game. With just three minutes to go, Wanink sank her second trey to propel the Terriers back in front.
Elena Pulanco also made her first shot of the game and a pair of free-throws to give Wofford a 39-36 lead going into halftime.
"I thought we played really solid basketball in the 1st half," said head coach
Jimmy Garrity. "We were able to run our offense and get the looks we wanted."
Jamari McDavid got things started for the Terriers in the second half, but a 24-7 run by the Badgers throughout the 3
rd quarter saw them take a 60-48 lead. "Give Wisconsin credit for coming out in the 3rd quarter, playing tough defense and making shots," said Garrity. "Their size really gave us some problems."
After finding themselves in an 18-point deficit, Wofford looked to start the same type of comeback that they had in Auburn last week. Wanink knocked down a jumper,
Niyah Lutz hit a three-pointer, and
MaryMartha Turner sank a three of her own to put Wofford within 12, down 68-56. But Wisconsin's defense would hold for the remainder of the game for a final score of 78-65.
"Wisconsin is a well-coached team and tough to beat at home, said coach Garrity. "I'm proud of the way our team came back and fought in the 4th quarter. We started getting consecutive stops on defense and were able to knock down some shots in transition. We will take away a lot of positives from this game as we get ready to take on a talented Gardner-Webb team on the road this week."
The Terriers are set to travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on Gardner-Webb on Thursday, November 14. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
