SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Riley Coonan recorded a career-high 18 kills as the Wofford volleyball team defeated The Citadel in four sets at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Wednesday night.
Catie Cronister totaled 17 kills and
Meghan Yaffa sent home 11 as Wofford was victorious 25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 25-21. Defensively, Coonan picked up a match-high six blocks while Yaffa totaled three.
Lorissa King handed out 44 assists as the Terriers improve to 15-14 on the season (8-7 SoCon). Wofford will finish the regular season at Chattanooga on Saturday, before returning home to compete in the 2019 SoCon Volleyball Championship (Nov. 22-24).
Coonan was on her A game from the start, recording a kill to get Wofford on the board, helping the team grab a 7-4 lead. The Citadel cut the deficit to one, but Wofford pushed the lead to four and never let the Bulldogs get closer than two points, as Coonan and Cronister finished off the set with kills.
Wofford took the momentum into the second set, taking seven of the first nine points. The Citadel rallied and took a lead of its own, going ahead 13-12 after a pair of aces. Coonan and Cronister struck again to grab the lead back for the Terriers before the Bulldogs evened things at 20-20. Four consecutive errors by The Citadel set up a
Chasidy Sharpe ace to make the match 2-0.
Aiming for the sweep, Wofford took a 3-2 lead and did not trail until almost the midway point of set three when The Citadel pulled ahead by one. With the score 15-14, the Bulldogs won 5-of-6 points, winning set three via an ace.
The Terriers came out swinging in the fourth to the tune of 6-2. Wofford extended its lead to six after a 4-0 rally made the score 13-7. The Bulldogs were not done yet, climbing back to even the set at 15-15 before pulling ahead 21-19. It was Coonan who turned the tide for the Terriers, sparking a 6-0 rally to win the match with her 17th kill of the night as Wofford ultimately claimed victory when Yaffa smashed home her 11th kill of the evening.
