Complete Team Game Gives Wofford First Win

Spartanburg, S.C. – Wofford's women's basketball team earned their first victory of the season by knocking off Longwood, 79-76. With the win, the Terriers bring their record to 1-4 on the season, while Longwood moves to 2-3.

For the fourth time this season, Wofford started the scoring off, as Jamari McDavid swished her jumper ten seconds into the game. Up until the media timeout it was a back-and-fourth game with Wofford leading at the stoppage, 13-10. The Terriers were firing on all cylinders as they would finish the quarter on a 13-3 run. Wofford shot 80% in the quarter and 100% from 3-point land.

The Terriers continued their impressive shooting, knocking down nearly everything they shot. Booker, Lutz, Hatton, Wanink, and Green seemingly could not be stopped, as Wofford stretched their lead to 41-23 midway through the 2nd quarter. More of the same from there on out as they led by as much as 19 through the quarter, ending the half with a 48-33 lead.

Longwood would not go down easily as they would start the second half on a 13-1 run to make it a four point game going into the media timeout. A Jamie Grob layup would give Wofford a little bit of breathing room, but Longwood kept battling as the 3rd quarter ended in a four point game, with the Terriers leading 57-53.

It seemed as if neither team missed a beat in the 4th quarter with both teams hitting clutch 3's and free-throws. Longwood kept pushing with everything they had, but the Terriers showed no signs of backing down as they knew they needed to win this game. Booker, who went perfect from the stripe, sank three free-throws, while Green made four out of her five in the 4th quarter. Longwood would cut the lead to one with 18 seconds to go, but Green, with ice in her veins, hit both her free-throws. A last second heave by Longwood missed the net and Wofford would win 79-76.

Cairo Booker led the Terriers with 20 points, which tied her career-high, and Da'Ja Green and Chloe Wanink both put up 18. Wofford outrebounded Longwood 37-25, with Lilly Hatton and Da'Ja Green leading the squad with 6 apiece. Green also added four assists and Booker had a team-high four steals.

"It was a tale of two halves for sure. Our first half we were really good offensively and our defense was pretty good too," said Coach Garrity. "I'm happy for our players, the way they responded to the adversity. The 3rd quarter could've shaken us, but we stood together and played together and we were all right. This win gives us a lot of confidence going into Saturday, I know the team is excited to play, and hopefully we can win number two and go from there."
