Spartanburg, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team earner their second straight win Saturday night after defeating the Winthrop Eagles, 60-59.
Jamari McDavid kicked off the scoring once again by knocking down a 12-foot jumper just 13 seconds into the game. On the ensuing Winthrop possession,
Lilly Hatton swatted down the Eagles' shot, which resulted in her own basket as she banked one off the glass.
Chloe Wanink stole the ball on the next possession and had an easy layup to put the Terriers up 6-3 early on.
Da'Ja Green and Wanink combined for two more buckets, forcing Winthrop to take a timeout.
Elena Pulanco checked in and buried her 3-pointer, and
Alea Harris hit a three of her own to make the score 18-5, all part of a 16-2 run by Wofford.
Jamie Grob got in on the action after she received a great pass from Wanink and laid it in, ending the quarter with a 25-14 lead.
To start the 2
nd quarter, Green would make a pair of free-throws and
Cairo Booker picked up her first basket of the game to give Wofford a 29-17 advantage. Winthrop cut the lead to 10, but
Alexis Tomlin,
Niyah Lutz, and
Chloe Wanink sent more balls through the hoop to increase the lead to 13. Wanink added another layup after a beautiful feed from
MaryMartha Turner, which sent the Terriers into halftime up 38-27.
"We came out ready to play, firing on all cylinders. Our defense was fantastic. We created some steals, got easy points in transition, and came out right from the git-go," said Coach Garrity on his team's first quarter performance.
Winthrop came out of the break on an 8-0 run, making it a one-score game, 38-35. After Lutz swished a triple for Wofford's first basket of the 3
rd quarter, McDavid made a fast-break layup to make the score, 43-41. Booker would then drain a three of her own and cross up her defender leading to an open layup, ending the 3
rd quarter with a 48-45 lead.
Alexis Tomlin would drop her 8-foot shot to make it a two-possession game, and by the media timeout the Terriers were ahead, 55-51. After Wanink put her defender through the spin cycle, she made a 10-footer to put Wofford back up by four, with 2:40 remaining. Winthrop was forced to foul as time was winding down. McDavid knocked one through and Hatton slapped the following rebound out to Green who was fouled and taken to the line. Green made both free-throws and secured the victory for the Terriers, 60-59.
"I was really proud of the way we hung on at the end. This team found a way and came together at the end and got a stop when they needed it," said Garrity. "I'm happy for them, the locker room is a happy place right now, and two in a row is a good roll right now. Our bench was key in the first half and they provided the spark to put us in that position. As far as Tuesday goes, it will take our best effort to win."
The Terriers will battle Presbyterian on Tuesday, November 26 at 7:00 p.m.
