Third-set rally gives Terriers sweep

Wofford tops Western Carolina in straight sets

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Trailing 13-5 in the third, the Wofford volleyball team rallied to win set three 25-21 and sweep Western Carolina on Friday night. Catie Cronister, with 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .414, powered Wofford to the 28-26, 25-17-25-21 victory at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

Meghan Yaffa had a strong game, totaling 10 kills and four digs, while Lorissa King dished out 35 assists in the win. The Terriers dominated play at the net, as Cronister, Riley Coonan and Claire Meier each had three momentum-swinging blocks while combining for 24 kills.

With the victory, Wofford improves to 14-13 on the season, going 7-6 in Southern Conference play thus far. The Terriers have a quick turnaround, hosting ETSU for senior day on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Wofford was able to gain an early lead in the first, but Western Carolina worked its way back to tie the set 10-10. The Catamounts would take a 17-14 lead, prompting five unanswered points from the Terriers. The teams traded points, with Western Carolina going ahead 24-23 but committed an error to extend the set. After Wofford went down 25-24, Yaffa sent home a kill that kept the set alive and the Terriers claimed set one with back-to-back kills from Coonan and Cronister.

The second set was all Wofford from the start, winning nine of the first 12 points. Looking to get back in the set, the Catamounts made the deficit three before a 4-0 Terrier run put distance between the two teams that Western Carolina could not make up, as Yaffa put Wofford up two sets to none with a kill.

Western Carolina was determined to extend the match, jumping ahead 6-1 before extending its lead to eight with a kill from Abigail Veit. Cronister rose up for a kill to make the score 13-6, awakening the Wofford offense which would win nine of the next 12 points to cut the deficit to just one. After the Catamounts went ahead 17-15, three kills, two errors and an ace  gave the Terriers a 21-17 advantage. Bossert and Yaffa extended the lead to five before a last-ditch effort rally from Western Carolina fell short, as Yaffa closed out the match with an ace.
