Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Terriers Prove to be Better Dog, Defeat Bulldogs by 37

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team started their academic semester break with a convincing win over UNC-Asheville by a score of 75-38. The win brings Wofford's record to 5-6 and the loss sends UNC-Asheville to 5-2.

Wofford went down early in the 1st quarter but brought themselves back in the game very quickly after Da'Ja Green made a pair of jumpers to bring the score even, 6-6. The Terriers would take the lead on the next possession after Lilly Hatton snatched the offensive rebound and kicked it out to Jamari McDavid who drained her shot. The Bulldogs would regain the lead for a moment, but Chloe Wanink made back-to-back layups to give the Terriers the lead once again. Wofford ended the 1st quarter on a 9-0 run.

It took a little time to find the first basket of the 2nd quarter, but Wofford started where they left off in the 1st quarter and continued their run. McDavid and Hatton combined for four points just before the media timeout to give the Terriers a 23-12 lead. Green dropped in a three and Wanink made a running jumper to extend the lead to 16. She then finished off the 2nd quarter with a triple of her own to send Wofford into the break, up 37-16. From the 3:00 mark in the 1st quarter, Wofford went on a 27-4 run to close out the first half.

Wofford never looked back from this point on and continued to add on to their already sizable lead. Cairo Booker swished her trey and Wanink put up four more points to push their lead to 27. McDavid knocked down a fast break jumper and Green scored a four-point play after hitting a three and the following free-throw. McDavid ended the quarter with two free-throws to give the Terriers a 59-28 advantage.

Booker wasted no time in the 4th quarter as she scored 10 seconds in with a well-touched fade away. Green kept dominating the floor as she flew by her defender for a layup, then a minute later shot over her defender for a deep two. Green ended her day with a deep three-pointer to give Wofford a 68-30 lead. The Terriers eased to victory in the final five minutes and went on to win 75-38.

This was the first game since the season opener at Auburn where two Terriers scored 20+ points, as Chloe Wanink and Da'Ja Green did that with 24 and 25, respectively. Wofford forced UNC-Asheville into turning the ball over 26 times, which is over ¼ of their total team turnovers for the season. Cairo Booker had a game-high five steals and Lilly Hatton blocked four shots.

"We just played basketball today. The team was playing free, they were loose, and they had a ton of confidence. Our defense was phenomenal today and that led to a lot of points on the offensive side," said Coach Garrity. "We turned them over 26 times, and we scored 30 points off turnovers…that's usually a recipe for success. Chloe and Da'Ja were on fire, playing with a lot of confidence, and that's when we're at our best. Erskine will be a game that's about us, coming out with a lot of intensity, and playing a good game start to finish."

Wofford concludes its home portion of the 2019 calendar year as they take on Erskine on Tuesday, December 17 at 6:00 p.m.
