Spartanburg, S.C. – With a limited bench and only one day's rest from their previous game, the Wofford women's basketball team showed no weaknesses in their game as they dominated the court, defeating Erskine, 100-38.
The 1
st quarter saw Wofford start on an 8-0 run as
Chloe Wanink nailed two threes and
Alexis Tomlin rattle in a jumper. Tomlin then added a layup after a great feed from
Jamari McDavid, and
Cairo Booker drove past her defender to make the score 12-7 at the media timeout. The Terriers added to their lead after
Da'Ja Green made a 4-point play and some stellar offensive rebounding led to easy free-throw makes for Wanink. Wanink ended the quarter with a corner trey, with Wofford leading 23-12.
Wanink started the 2
nd quarter just as she ended the first, as she knocked down back-to-back triples to give Wofford a 17-point advantage and forced Erskine to call a timeout. It would take about four minutes for Wofford to find their next basket, but the lead was no different.
Elena Pulanco,
Chloe Wanink, and
Alexis Tomlin all made a pair of free-throws, and
Da'Ja Green capped off the quarter from three-point land that gave the Terriers a 43-17 lead at halftime.
The 3
rd quarter had both teams trading baskets for the first few minutes, but it didn't take long for Wofford to settle in and take over. The Terriers went on a 13-2 run to end off the quarter. Wanink made two running jumpers, Booker sank two free-throws, Pulanco blew by her defender for a layup, and
Lawren Cook hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key, which gave Wofford a 40-point lead, 70-30.
The Terriers showed no signs of slowing down in the 4
th quarter as they continued to tack on to the run they ended the 3
rd quarter with.
Da'Ja Green displayed her transition game as she dished the rock and scored multiple times. Wanink made her seventh three of the evening after Cook stole it on the defensive end. Booker was automatic as she swished free-throws 3 & 4 of the night. Tomlin scored six more points in the final five minutes to give her a season-high 19, as the Terriers cruised to victory in their final home game of 2019.
This was the third straight game where Wofford held their opponent to under 40 points. Three Terriers put up double-doubles…
Alexis Tomlin had 19 points and 13 rebounds,
Da'Ja Green had 14 points and 11 assists, and
Lawren Cook had 10 points and 10 rebounds, all her points coming in the second half.
Chloe Wanink also ended with a season-high 39 points.
"It was a challenge tonight with the bench limited to two subs, but the team did a great job playing as hard as they could knowing they would all play big minutes," said head coach
Jimmy Garrity. It's special when three girls pick up double-doubles, especially when some of them only play limited minutes, and it says a lot to where their game has grown. Chloe had a phenomenal game scoring 39 and her game just keeps improving every day. Northern Kentucky is a tough team, they play a tough game, but we're going to play just as hard and the team is ready to take them on."
The Terriers will be on the road for the first time in over a month as they travel to face Northern Kentucky on Friday, December 20 at 7:00 p.m.
