Lawrence, KS – The Wofford women's basketball team gave it their all in a battle against Kansas on Monday night, however, the Terriers were unable to come out on top as they fell 83-64.
The Terriers put the first points on the board after a
Cairo Booker steal in the defensive zone. She left the ball for
Da'Ja Green and Green scored on the ensuing offensive possession. Wofford got their "bigs" involved in the next few plays as
Lilly Hatton and
Jamari McDavid made jumpers to cut the Kansas lead to five.
Chloe Wanink took three attempts from behind the arc, and third times the charm as after two stellar offensive rebounds, Wanink nailed the triple. Booker scored the final four points of the quarter for Wofford as she knocked down a free-throw and made a 3-pointer of her own, to end the 1
st quarter down 22-13.
Wofford struggled to start the 2
nd quarter but came back with a vengeance in the final five minutes with a 17-4 run.
Alea Harris started the momentum swing with a fast break three.
Niyah Lutz then made two free-throws and
Alexis Tomlin made her pair after she was fouled while grabbing the offensive rebound. Back-to-back threes from Green and McDavid brought the deficit to only four. The Jayhawks made a layup in transition, but
Lilly Hatton scored with eight seconds left that saw a once 17-point lead drop to four, with the Terriers trailing at halftime 38-34.
The Terriers fought hard to keep the Jayhawk lead to single digits with
Cairo Booker swishing a pair of free-throws. A minute later,
Da'Ja Green dropped a triple after a Hatton offensive rebound that made it a one-score game, 42-39. Kansas would bring an end to the Terrier threat as they would go on a 16-2 run that pushed their lead back to 17. Wofford still had some life left as they would find contributions from Hatton, Booker, and
Lawren Cook that would bring the game within 11.
The 4
th quarter began with Kansas extending their lead to 15, but coming off her screen was
Lilly Hatton to knock down the three to make it a 12-point game with eight minutes to go. The Terriers and Jayhawks traded three balls and with 5:32 remaining, time was becoming the enemy. With Kansas hitting their shots and Wofford banking everything off the rim, the few 3-pointers left by the Terriers were just for consolation as they could not pull off the comeback and were taken down in the final game of 2019.
Jamari McDavid led the team with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Da'Ja Green had a team-high seven assists.
Chloe Wanink had a game-high four steals and
Alexis Tomlin had two blocks.
"I'm proud of the effort we put in tonight. I thought our 2
nd quarter defense was really good, and we were able to execute on the offensive end to go into halftime only down by 4," said head coach
Jimmy Garrity. "I give Kansas a lot of credit coming out in the second half getting defensive stops and converting on the offensive end. It was such a great experience for our players and coaching staff to play in such a historic building, and even though we didn't come out on top, it was an honor and privilege to play at Allen Fieldhouse."
The Terriers will wrap up their non-conference schedule as they will play host to Brevard on Thursday, January 2
nd at 2:00 p.m.
