Spartanburg, S.C. – Wofford's women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Appalachian State Wednesday night by a final score of 54-51.
It was a slow start for the Terriers as they were victims of an early 7-0 run by the Mountaineers, being forced to take a timeout. Wofford came out well out of the timeout going on a 6-0 run of their own.
Alexis Tomlin,
Jamari McDavid, and
Da'Ja Green made the baskets as that made it a one-point game. Appalachian State ended the quarter on a 9-2 run, leading by eight at the end of the 1
st quarter.
The Mountaineers kept pouring it on to begin the 2
nd quarter, taking a 25-10 lead four minutes in. Wofford battled back as they controlled the rest of the quarter, ended the half on a 10-2 run. Green knocked down a three, Tomlin hit a pair of free-throws, and
Chloe Wanink swished her two free-throws to cut the lead down to single digits. Tomlin added two more just before the end of the quarter to see the Terriers only down by seven at the half.
Wofford came out strong to start the 3
rd quarter as Wanink dropped two jumpers to make it a one-score game. The two teams traded buckets up to the media timeout with Wofford only trailing by one. Out of the timeout,
Lilly Hatton made a 12-footer to give the terriers their first lead of the night. The Mountaineers would come back and have a three-point lead at the end of the quarter, 39-36.
Even though Appalachian State held the lead, Wofford was right there on the doorstep looking to take the lead back again.
Cairo Booker was taken to the line as she made both free-throws to make it a one-point game yet again. The Mountaineers would take a seven-point lead with just under four minutes to go, but the Terriers weren't done fighting yet. Green, Hatton, and Booker combined for nine points with only 11 second to play and the Terriers down by one. Forced to foul, Wofford had to send Appalachian State to the free-throw line, and that's where the Mountaineers iced the game.
Da'Ja Green had a team-high 16 points and
Chloe Wanink added 15 with four rebounds.
Lilly Hatton continues her block per game pace as she slapped away a layup, and
Alexis Tomlin went 100% from the stripe, going 4-4.
"It was a rough first quarter and we had a hard time scoring the ball. One of the keys to the game was taking care of the ball and we had a tough time doing that," said Garrity. "We regrouped in the second quarter and we stayed in the game and came back. It was a rough start, but besides that we played even with them or won the quarter. We'll regroup from this and will have a good showing on Saturday."
