SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team narrowly fell short of completing a singles comeback on Monday afternoon, falling to the undefeated Troy Trojans, 4-2. The Terriers fell in doubles, but retaliated taking two of the first three singles to deadlock the match before the final two matches. The loss drops Wofford to 3-5 overall, while Troy moves to 7-0.
 
The Trojans would get things started in doubles action right away, as Jiaqi Duan and Pelayo Antuna would deliver a quick 6-1 loss to Julian Chousa and Javi Casasolas on the No. 1 court.
 
Omar Williams and Bryce Keim bounced back for the Terriers in No. 2 doubles, picking up a 6-3 comeback win over Luis Foix and Christopher Tasker to knot things up.
 
The doubles point came down to the No. 3 matchup, as John Crawford and Kyle Barr rallied to bring the differential within one game against Manuel Bernard and Oscar Michalek, 5-4. Troy would however hold on for the win down the stretch, 6-4, to earn the 1-0 lead at the end of doubles.
 
Sophomore Edu Villar would bring in a crucial singles win to start off singles play, tying the match with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win over Bernard on the No. 3 court.
 
Lucas Cerbelli then lifted Wofford with a win over Duan, 6-4, 6-4, in No. 4 singles to push the Terriers' lead to 2-1.
 
The Trojans would answer in No. 1 singles with a hard-fought win, as Julian Chousa forced a tiebreak in the second set but unfortunately came up short, 6-3, 7-5, to Troy's Pelayo Antuna.
 
Omar Williams took the first set, 6-1, of No. 2 singles, however, Troy's Michalek would fight back in the second to force a tiebreaker set, earning the comeback win (1-6, 6-2, 6-4) for the Trojans to reclaim the match lead, 3-2.
 
The No. 5 singles, featuring freshman Bryce Keim and Troy's Christopher Tasker, proved to be the deciding match, as Tasker forced a tiebreaker set after falling in the first to Keim, 6-3. Keim held the advantage for most of the third set, though, Tasker would rally late to take the set and match (3-6, 6-4, 7-6), granting Troy the 4-2 win and continued unbeaten streak.
 
"This was one heck of a college match," said head coach Rod Ray. "Losing 7-6 in the third with the match on the line is tough, but you can't learn from that experience by reading about it in a book. I know this team and we'll respond well."
 
The Terriers return to Reeves Tennis Center on Saturday, February 16, hosting College of Charleston for a 10 a.m. start time.
