SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team broke a near 20-year win drought against the Chattanooga Mocs on Saturday afternoon, picking up their third straight SoCon win at Richardson Indoor Stadium, 64-60. The last time Wofford had defeated Chattanooga was on February 25, 1999, when the Terriers won 73-69 in the SoCon tournament. The win moves Wofford to 6-5 in conference and 14-12 overall, as the Mocs drop to 11-14 overall and 6-4 in league play.
Â
"It feels great. It's been a long time since our program has been in this situation," said head coach
Jimmy Garrity of the win over the Mocs. "I'm super proud and super happy for them. We ran in transition, we took care of the ball fantastic. Just really happy for these girls."
Â
Junior
Chloe Wanink paced the Terriers with 20 points, three rebounds, and three assists, while sophomore
Jamari McDavid followed with 12 points, on 6-of-11 shooting, and five boards. Freshman
Niyah Lutz rounds out the double-figure scorers, totaling 11 points, three rebounds, and two assists in 15 minutes off the bench.
Â
The Terriers also received efforts from junior
Cairo Booker (nine points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals), senior
Marissa Bayer (six points, seven rebounds), freshman
Alexis Tomlin (four points, five rebounds), and sophomore
Da'Ja Green (five rebounds, seven assists).
Â
Down 18-16 after the first quarter, the Mocs would push their largest lead of the half, 23-16, to open the second frame.
Jamari McDavid would then score four of the next six points to give Wofford the lead, 24-23, at the 6:27 mark. Play was back-and-forth throughout the period, with three lead changes, though, the Terriers would create a six-point cushion (31-25) behind a Wanink three, pull-up jumper, and
Cairo Booker finish with 1:37 left in the half. A Chattanooga three would then go on to send the score at 31-28 into the intermission.
Â
The Terriers connected on 14-of-35 (40.0%) attempts in the first half, led by
Jamari McDavid with 10 first-half points. Wofford's defense forced balanced scoring for Chattanooga, as the Mocs were held to just 33.3 percent (11-33 FG) shooting, though, they were 5-of-13 (38.5%) from beyond the arc in the half.
Â
Wanink would open the scoring in the second half burying a 3-pointer, followed by a
Marissa Bayer jumper, to hold an eight-point margin, 36-28. Both teams would exchange baskets, as Chattanooga's Lakelyn Bouldin scored five straight points, in addition to a layup, to deadlock the score at 40-40 by the 3:04 mark. Scores from Wanink and Booker would go on to hold four-point spreads, however, a Mya Long layup and Bouldin finish just before the end of the period would knot the score again at 46 at the end of the third.
Â
"We've been in a lot of these games and we've been on the other end quite a few times too. So, just learning from those experiences and making it happen here (has helped) when you get that same experience again," asserted Garrity of finishing games in the fourth.
A
Cairo Booker and-1 to start the fourth would spark a 10-0 run for the Terriers, as scores from McDavid and Wanink pushed their first double-digit lead (56-46), followed by
Alexis Tomlin free throws to give Wofford its largest lead of the day, 58-46, with 5:56 left to play. The Mocs would cut the lead in half just three minutes later (58-52), chipping away as Bouldin held the hot-hand, knocking down a three to cut the lead to two, 60-58, by the 1:19 mark. A Tomlin short-corner jumper and Booker free throw extended the lead to five (63-58), though, a Brooke Burns finish made the score 63-60 with just seven seconds remaining. With fouls to give, the Mocs frenzied to foul as quick as possible to force free throws, however, the Terriers would outlast the surge to go on and claim the 64-60 victory.
Â
Wofford finished the contest shooting 42.6 percent (26-61 FG), while knocking down 4-of-11 (36.4%) 3-pointers on the day. The Terriers held Chattanooga to 36.2 percent (25-69 FG) shooting from the floor, while allowing 9-of-27 (33.3%) from deep. The Mocs took the advantage in rebounds (38-35), though, Wofford was active in creating 10 turnovers for the contest, while assisting on 15 makes.
Â
Lakelyn Bouldin, the Mocs' lone double-figure scorer, led Chattanooga with 21 points and three rebounds on the day.
Â
Next, the Terriers will host SoCon foe Furman at Richardson Indoor Stadium next Saturday (Feb. 23) for Senior Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
