Hoover eclipses 1,000-career points as Wofford routs Chattanooga 80-54

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Junior guard Nathan Hoover scored his 1,000th-career point as the No. 24 Wofford Terriers dominated Chattanooga 80-54 on Thursday night.

A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Hoover became the 50th Terrier in the history of the program to score 1,000 or more points, joining teammates Cameron Jackson and Fletcher Magee.

"I think in 2015 it was the first time in Wofford history we had three players on one team with 1,000 points (Lee Skinner, Spencer Collins, Karl Cochran) and we've done it again," said Wofford head coach Mike Young. "Nathan Hoover is a big time player. I'm proud of Nathan. That is a real big milestone and we will honor him appropriately next year when we have a home game."

Hoover totaled 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting, while Magee led the Terriers with 18 points and Jackson registered his fifth double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Terriers improve to 25-4 overall on the season, moving to a perfect 17-0 in Southern Conference play. Wofford next takes the court on Saturday, traveling to Samford to face the Bulldogs at 2 p.m. EST.

"We know that every team is going to give us their best shot," said Hoover "Samford was a very tough game at home and we have to be ready to go."

Wofford quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead only to have Chattanooga erase it and tie the game up at 9-9. With score 20-18 in favor of the Terriers, Keve Aluma scored inside and Storm Murphy began to make his presence felt, scoring six of the next eight points as Wofford extended its lead to eight.

The Mocs kept the game close as Donovan Toatley knocked down a 3-pointer to make the lead seven, but Magee connected on his fourth 3-pointer of the half to send the Terriers into the break up by 10.

"I was less than satisfied with that first half," said Young. "Fletcher, like he's done so many times hit a big three to bail us out and put us up by 10 and that was big for momentum."

Jackson set the tone immediately in the second, opening up the half by scoring seven straight. After Aluma forced a miss from the Mocs, Hoover rifled a pass to the forward who finished at the rim, putting Wofford up 50-33 and forcing a Chattanooga timeout.

"We got on Cam a little bit at half," Young said. "I didn't think he was Cameron Jackson in the first half, but he comes back in the second half and locks down a double-double for us."

Wofford continued to apply the pressure, as Murphy found Hoover in transition for a knock-down three to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for his career.

"It's really cool," Hoover said. "But it's really not about me. It's about my teammates and my coaches a lot of credit. They put me in the positions to score and I owe a lot to them."

Jackson finished once again inside and 3-pointers from Tray Hollowell and Matthew Pegram capped off the 20-2 as the Terriers held a commanding 61-33 lead with 15 minutes to play. From here, the Terriers cruised to the 80-54 victory.

"I feel great," said Wofford head coach Mike Young. "But as we said after the AP ranking came out on Monday, there's no time to exhale. We have to begin our preparation for Samford on Saturday and we'll be ready to go."
