Men's Tennis Falls to Winthrop in Home-Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team fell in their home-opener, 6-1, to the visiting Winthrop Eagles at Reeves Tennis Center on Friday afternoon. Despite the outcome, the match proved to be competitive, as the last three singles matches were decided by tiebreakers. The loss drops Wofford to 1-4, while Winthrop moves to 3-3 overall.

The Eagles held a 1-0 lead after doubles play to start the match, taking matches on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts. The Spartanburg duo of Omar Williams and Bryce Keim picked up their first doubles victory of the year in No. 2 doubles, defeating Gabriel Dias and Lluis Miralles, 6-2.

Javi Casasolas and Lucas Cerbelli played a competitive match on the No. 3 court, but ended up coming up short, 6-3, to Alberto Tinagli and Aditya Gokhale.

The one-point decision would come down to the No. 1 doubles, where Julian Chousa and John Crawford fought back to make the score 5-4, in Winthrop's favor, by the end of the previous doubles matches. Winthrop's Connor Williamson and Diego Quiroz would unfortunately capitalize in the last game to avoid a tiebreak, earning a 6-4 win to grant the Eagles the early 1-0 edge.

Winthrop would then go on to earn the first three singles wins to bust out a 4-0 lead. The Eagles picked up their first singles win on the No. 1 court, as Julian Chousa fell, 6-3, 6-1, to Quiroz.

Williamson then followed with a win in No. 3 singles over Lucas Cerbelli, 6-3, 6-3.

Omar Williams played a tough match in No. 2 singles, dropping a tiebreak in the first set that led to a 7-5, 6-2 loss against Dias.

The Terriers saw a resilient finish for Edu Villar in No. 4 singles, forcing a tiebreaker to earn the lone comeback win over Lluis Miralles for Wofford on the day. However, Bryce Keim (No. 5) and Javi Casasolas (No. 6) would go on to drop hard fought tiebreakers to the Eagles, ending the match in Winthrop's favor.

Next, the Terriers will host a doubleheader, in conjunction with the women's team, against King University (11 a.m) and Emmanuel College (3 p.m.) tomorrow on Saturday, February 9 at Reeves Tennis Center.
