SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore
Edu Villar lifted the Terriers over the Bears with a three-set comeback singles victory to edge Mercer, 4-3, at Reeves Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. Junior
Lucas Cerbelli and sophomore
Javi Casasolas also added their first conference singles wins on the day for the Terriers. Mercer's four-game win streak comes to an end, as the Bears had won the past four meetings between the two teams. The win moves Wofford to 5-9 overall and 2-1 in the SoCon, while Mercer falls to 7-9 and 0-1.
Â
"No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 doubles were super tough mentally and that pride carried over into the singles," said head coach
Rod Ray. "I'm so proud of how we responded today. Lucas, Javi, and Edu were incredibly determined."
Â
The Terriers entered doubles introducing new lineups in the No. 1 and No. 2 spot, as
Omar Williams and
Julian Chousa paired on the No. 1 court while
Javi Casasolas and
Bryce Keim paired on the No. 2 court.
Diego Losada and
Lucas Cerbelli would team up on the No. 3 court for their third matchup together.
Â
Chousa and Williams brought in the first doubles win for Wofford, snapping Olivier Stuart and Nicolas Guillon's two-game win streak for their first conference doubles victory paired together.
Â
Lucas Cerbelli and
Diego Losada came back from a 3-0 deficit to start on the No. 3 court, winning five of the next six games to hold a 5-4 lead over Mercer's Carver Arant and Fernando Guardia. The Bears forced a tiebreak, as Losada and Cerbelli would hold on for the 7-5 win to earn Wofford's second consecutive doubles point in SoCon play. The win also marks the second straight and first conference win for the pair.
Â
Mercer tied the match at the start of singles play, as Olivier Stuart would drop Chousa in straight sets to start off on the No. 1 court. Â
Â
Lucas Cerbelli answered for the Terriers in No. 4 singles, snapping a three-game skid to pick up his third singles win at the No. 4 spot over Guirda to reclaim the lead for Wofford, 2-1.
Â
The Bears would respond shortly after on the No. 2 court, as
Omar Williams came out strong, 6-1, in the first set before dropping the next two to Guillon to knot the match up at 2-2.
Â
After dropping the first set on the No. 5 court to Mercer's Carver Arant,
Javi Casasolas rallied to win the next two sets, 6-4, 6-2, to ruin Arant's four-game win streak while reclaiming the lead once again for the Terriers, 3-2. The win serves as Casasolas' first conference win of the season and third singles win in the No. 5 spot.
Â
The Bears, however, wouldn't let up, taking No. 6 singles in straight sets as
Diego Losada unfortunately came up on the bottom end of a tiebreak in the second set to Georgadze, dropping his three-game win streak.
Â
With the match tied at 3-3,
Edu Villar found his rhythm after dropping the first set to Tsiranidis on the No. 3 court. Villar completed a three-set comeback, winning the next two sets, 6-3, 6-4, to pick up his second straight singles win and give the Terriers their second consecutive SoCon victory of the year.
Â
Next, the Terriers prepare to host SoCon foe Furman at Reeves Tennis Center on Wednesday, March 20. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
