Women's Tennis Bests Western Carolina in Home Finale on Senior Day

Terriers finish the regular season 12-7 overall and 4-3 in the SoCon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's tennis team earned a 4-3 win over Western Carolina on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, as seniors Curran Carver and Cassidy Hicks were honored prior to the match before sending the two out with a win in their last match at Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers conclude the regular season 12-7 overall and 4-3 in the SoCon, while Western Carolina finished 12-9 overall and 2-5. Wofford's 12 wins and four SoCon victories are the most in a season since the 2007-08 team, who finished 12-8 and 4-5 in the SoCon.

The Catamounts started the day claiming the doubles point with wins on the No. 3 and No. 2 courts. Cassidy Hicks and Jenna Vroman blanked Savannah Taranto and Jordan Strickland, 6-0, on the No. 1 court to add their 14th win of the year, now tied with Kalli Karas '17 (who partnered with Hicks) for most doubles wins in a season.

Curran Carver and Brittney Wilbur fought back from a 2-5 deficit in No. 3 doubles to return within striking distance, 4-5, however, Western Carolina's Alexa Webb and Lauren McCall would go on to notch the 6-4 decision.

The No. 2 matchup would be the decider, as Liz Massie and Lilie Steryous battled back-and-forth with Jacy Smith and Julia Pezzuco. Massie and Steryous forced a tiebreak, but the Catamounts would hold off for the 7-6 decision to earn the doubles point.

The Terriers got on the right track in singles play, starting off taking the first set in all six matches on the day.

Sophomore Jenna Vroman notched her 14th singles victory overall and fifth SoCon win in the No. 1 position, downing Strickland in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

Lilie Steryous followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Taranto on the No. 3 court, as Cassidy Hicks finished her Senior Day efforts on the winning side, 6-2, 6-2, over Smith in No. 2 singles. The wins mark the ninth and 11th for Steryous and Hicks on the year respectively.

The Catamounts pulled it together for the remaining three matches, as all three were pushed into three sets to finish the day.

After taking the first (7-5) on the No. 4 court, sophomore Kay Kluska fell in the second, 6-2, to Lauren McCall. McCall then took over in the third, winning six straight games to cut the Terriers' lead to one, 3-2.

Classmate Brittney Wilbur would take the first set (6-4) in her matchup at No. 5 singles before Webb answered decisively in the second, 6-1. The two competed hard in the third set, but Wilbur would go on to outlast Webb, 6-4, to snap her five-match skid and clinch the win for Wofford.

Curran Carver (No. 6) fell in three sets to Julia Pezzuco, 6-4, 5-7, 5-7, though, the Terriers remained victorious, 4-3, despite the loss.

Next, Wofford enters the 2019 Southern Conference tournament as a No. 3 seed, the highest seeding earned in program history, slated to play No. 6 seeded Mercer on Thursday, April 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the John Drew Tennis Center in Macon, Ga.
