ATHENS, Ga. - The Wofford men's golf wrapped up the 2019 spring season on Monday in windy Athens, Georgia, finishing second in a field of 17 teams. Sophomore
Ryan Marter was the top finisher for the Terriers, shooting a 2-under-par 142.
"Incredibly proud of our guys today," said Wofford head coach
Alex Hamilton. "Unbelievable effort in some really difficult conditions. The greens were lightning fast and we had very high winds. Our guys showed great composure and patience."
The tournament was won by South Carolina, who shot 14-under-par for the two rounds. As a team, Wofford opened up Monday by shooting 4-over-par, capping off the day with a 2-over-par 290, edging out No. 14 Georgia by three strokes. The second-place finish is the best Wofford has placed since the 2018 Wofford Invitational in which the Terriers were also the runner up.
"To beat Georgia at Georgia, let alone anywhere, is an incredible accomplishment," Hamilton said. "A top 15 team in the country with the legacy that they have is something to really be proud of."
Marter, a sophomore from Columbia, South Carolina, opened up with a round-one 73 in gusty conditions, but rebounded strong with a 3-under-par 69 in the second round. Marter birdied three holes in the first round, and four in the second, registering an eagle on hole No. 10.
"Marter played outstanding," said Hamilton. "Very happy for him. Played solid all day and had a great closing birdie to secure our second-place finish."
Walker Simas and
Walker Jones both tied for 12th place, shooting 2-over-par for the day. During the first round, Simas birdied holes two, six and 10, totaling 1-under-par. The junior from Charlotte, North Carolina, birdied three of the first nine holes in the second round, but struggled on the back to end up 3-over-par for the second 18.
Freshman
Matthew Copeland rounded out the scoring for Wofford, finishing 4-over-par and tying for 19th place. Copeland was consistent, totaling 2-over-par in both rounds, with five birdies on the day.
Jones, a freshman, sank a birdie on hole No. 1 but had three bogey's to finish 2-over-par after one round. The Sumter, South Carolina, native birdied holes No. 4 and 14 in the second round to finish with a second-round even par.
Wofford will compete in the Southern Conference Championships at Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, North Carolina, from April 21 to 23.
"We are starting to play better at hopefully the right time with conference coming up next," said Hamilton. "Hopefully we can build on this success next week."
