SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford Terriers hosted Mercer for its first SoCon matchup of the 2019 season, as the Bears were victorious 20-6 at Gibbs Stadium on Friday.
All six Wofford goals came from different players, as
Ally Furnari scored one goal and dished out two assists in the game. As a team, Wofford totaled 16 shots, 14 ground balls and 14 draw controls.
Mercer, who won the SoCon tournament in 2018, raced out to an 8-0 lead before
Hannah Wurzel got the Terriers on the board. After the Bears responded with a pair of goals,
Hannah Mutch drilled a free position shot to make the deficit eight again.
Furnari connected on a free position shot at the 4:38 mark before finding
Grace Geraghty for her third goal of the season to make the score 13-4 in favor of Mercer.
After scoring just before the break, the Bears opened up the second with six unanswered goals. Wofford showed some life late, as
Elisabeth Ralph caught a pass from
Emily Elstun and whipped it behind her head into the back of the net. With under three minutes to paly,
Sophie Smith took a pass from Furnari and connected to make the score 20-6.
Wofford will return to the field on Sunday, hosting Kennesaw State at 1 p.m.
