GREENSBORO, N.C. – On Friday night, the Wofford College baseball team used a big third inning on the way to a 18-10 win over UNCG at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Terriers scored once in the first inning and twice in the second inning before exploding for ten runs in the third inning for a 13-0 lead. The Spartans scored four runs in the bottom of the third and five in the fourth to cut the score to 13-9. Wofford added two runs in the fifth, one in the seventh and two in the ninth for an 18-9 lead. UNCG scored once in the ninth for the 18-10 final score.

Wofford is 32-23 on the season and 13-9 in the Southern Conference. UNCG is 33-17 overall and 14-9 in league play. The Terriers had 19 hits in the game, with three each by
Lawson Hill,
Colin Davis,
Andrew Orzel and
Reed Massey. All nine players scored runs for the Terriers and
Reed Massey led the team with five RBIs. The ten runs in the third inning marked the seventh-most in an inning in school history. The Spartans were led by Josh Madole and Ryan Caveness with three RBIs each.

Mike Brown opened the game with a single, but he was caught stealing second.
Brett Rodriguez walked and a double down the right field line gave Wofford a 1-0 lead. The Spartans opened their half of the first inning with a hit by a pitch which was followed by a double play turned by the Terriers. UNCG left one runner on base after a walk.

Colin Davis singled to begin the second inning and on a sacrifice bunt by
Alec Cargin there was an error that allowed Davis to score and Cargin ended up at second. A bunt single by
Andrew Orzel gave the Terriers runners on the corners.
Reed Massey was safe on a bunt that scored Cargin for a 3-0 lead. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners into scoring position before a strikeout and fly ball ended the top half of the second.

The Spartans had a single with one out in the bottom of the second inning, but the runner was unable to advance.
Lawson Hill led off the third inning with a single and
John Dempsey was hit by a pitch. A single through the left side by
Colin Davis gave Wofford a 4-0 advantage. A bunt single by
Alec Cargin loaded the bases. RBI singles by
Andrew Orzel and
Reed Massey made it 6-0 with the bases still loaded. On a fielder's choice by
Mike Brown a throwing error allowed two runs to score and Brown ended up on second base as Wofford had an 8-0 advantage. With one out
Hudson Byorick was hit by a pitch to load the bases when a single by
Lawson Hill drove in two more runs for a 10-0 lead. A walk to
John Dempsey had the bases loaded again and back-to-back walks to
Colin Davis and
Alec Cargin pushed the lead to 12-0. A sacrifice fly by
Andrew Orzel made it 13-0 before a ground out ended the top of the third.

In the bottom of the third the Spartans led off with a triple. With one out a walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases when a wild pitch allowed a run to score. A ground out plated a run and a home run by Ryan Caevness cut the lead to 13-4. Wofford had a batter reach on a walk with two outs but was picked off to end the top of the fourth inning. The Spartans had a single to open the bottom of the fourth and it was followed by a fielder's choice. A wild pitch advanced the runner and a single scored a run for a 13-5 score. A single and a double followed to score a run and a triple plated two. A sacrifice fly added a run to make it a 13-9 game at the end of the fourth inning.

Lawson Hill singled to lead off the fifth inning.
John Dempsey cleared the fence in right field for his seventh home run of the season and giving Wofford a 15-9 lead.
Colin Davis and
Alec Cargin added singles. After Davis was picked off second base, a hit-and-run by
Andrew Orzel gave Wofford runners on the corners. Cargin was picked off third base and a strikeout ended the top half. The Spartans were retired in order to close out the fifth inning.
Hudson Byorick singled with two outs in the top of the sixth inning, but a fielder's choice ended the half.

The Spartans were retired in order in the bottom of the sixth, with the third out a diving catch by
Hudson Byorick at the wall.
John Dempsey started the seventh inning with a single and moved to second on a balk.
Colin Davis walked and with one out a hit by pitch to
Andrew Orzel loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by
Reed Massey gave the Terriers a 16-9 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh the Spartans left one on base after a walk with two outs. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the Spartans had back-to-back singles before a strikeout ended the frame.
Alec Cargin and
Andrew Orzel walked with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. A double steal moved them into scoring position and a double down the left line by
Reed Massey drove in both runners for an 18-9 advantage. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Spartans had a walk and single to put runners on the corners. A fielder's choice plated a run and another fielder's choice ended the game.

David Yourke started for the Terriers and went 2.2 innings with four runs allowed on three hits, along with two strikeouts.
Anthony Garcia threw 1.1 innings with five runs allowed on five hits and a strikeout.
Reece Maniscalco (4-1) tied a career-long five innings on the mound with one run allowed on three hits and six strikeouts.

UNCG starter Phillip Sanderson (5-4) threw two innings with seven runs allowed on eight hits and two strikeouts. Corey Jackson gave up five runs on three hits in a third of an inning. Jack Voight allowed one run on three walks. Brandon Stephens worked 3.2 innings with two runs allowed on six hits and a strikeout. Austin Parsley worked two innings with one run allowed on one hit and a strikeout. Maddux Holshouser threw an inning with two runs allowed on one hit.

The Terriers and Spartans will conclude the series on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. to end the regular season. Wofford will open play in the 2019 Southern Conference Tournament on Wednesday, May 22 at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. With the win on Friday, the Terriers have secured at least the #4 seed for the tournament.
