Men’s Soccer Falls to University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

HOUSTON, TEXAS- The Wofford men's soccer team (0-2-0) was defeated by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), 2-1, on Friday night at Sorrels Field. Playing at a neutral site on the campus of Houston Baptist University, the Terriers dropped a close match as a late Vaquero goal secured the win for UTRGV in this non-conference battle.

Striking early in the first half, the Vaqueros jumped on the board first when Dimitris Strantzalis scored on an assist from Kyle Edwards at the 4:02 mark. The Terriers would counter with four shots from four different players throughout the rest of the half, but could not find the back of the net as Wofford headed to the locker room trailing at halftime, 1-0.

Looking to even things up, senior Sam Ross recorded his first assist of the season when an open Eduardo Velasco found the equalizer in the 55th minute to knot the score at 1. For the next 25 minutes, Wofford and UTRGV exchanged shots back and forth, but neither team was able to score. With the match coming down to the wire, the Vaqueros took the lead in the 80th minute on a goal from Angel Lopez. Senior Ben Nickol attempted one more shot in the final minute of the contest as the Terriers tried to mount a comeback, but it was ultimately not enough as Wofford fell to UTRGV by a final score of 2-1.

For the Terriers, freshman Adrian Roseth led the offensive attack with 3 total shots, including two that were on goal. Velasco followed with two shots himself along with one shot a piece from Nickol, Ross, Alex Dennis, Brandon Oddy, Lucas Altman, Austin Tuggle, and Meade Fowler. Redshirt sophomore Shane Berson also tallied 6 saves in goal for Wofford.

The Terriers return home to Snyder Field for their next match on Friday, September 6 when they host the Winthrop Eagles at 7:00 pm. Fans can stream this match on the Southern Conference Digital Network at game time.
