SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team (1-2-0) notched their first victory of the season on Friday night as they defeated the visiting Winthrop Eagles, 1-0 at Snyder Field. With the win,
Joel Tyson picked up his first victory as a collegiate head coach.
"It's exciting, but really I'm just excited for the group of guys. They've been real incredible for the first three weeks of the year so far," said Tyson after the match. "Even when I got here in January, just to see how far they have come in terms of their discipline to play, discipline to play for each other… that was the most exciting part of tonight by far."
After traveling to Houston, Texas, this past weekend to kick off their 2019 regular season, the Terriers returned to Snyder Field for their first home match of the year. Looking to catch their opponent off guard, Tyson started six true freshman and one transfer in the match, including goalkeeper
Joshua Old. However, this would not slow down the Terrier attack as
Adrian Roseth and
Brandon Oddy attempted shots within the first eleven minutes of the contest. Winthrop would counter with a shot of their own in the 20
th minute, but neither team seemed to find an edge as the score was scoreless at halftime.
Coming out of the locker room, Wofford used the home crowd to their advantage as senior
Sam Ross led an offensive attack that resulted in a beautiful assist to freshman
Alex Dennis, who put the Terriers out in front with his first collegiate goal in the 52
nd minute. Winthrop would attempt a late comeback with another shot in the closing minutes, but Wofford continued to force pressure on their opponents by outshooting the Eagles 6-1 in the second half, closing out the victory by a final score of 1-0.
Overall, the Terriers enjoyed a stellar night on offense, outshooting Winthrop 12-2. Six different players were able to record shots on the night, including two each from Dennis, Roseth, Oddy,
Lucas Altman and Eduardo Velazco. Seniors
Austin Tuggle and
Ben Nickol would also each notch a shot of their own in the win. Additionally, it would be a historic night for Old as he tallied one save in his first collegiate win in goal.
Wofford resumes play Sunday, September 8 when they host the visiting Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs at 7:00 pm at Snyder Field. Fans can watch this match live at game time on the Southern Conference Digital Network.
