SPARTANBURG, S.C – The Wofford men's soccer team (1-3-0) fell to the visiting Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, 1-0, on Sunday night at Snyder Field. In what proved to be a back-and-forth match between the two teams, the Terriers could not quite find the back of the net throughout the contest and ultimately fell victim to a late goal from their opponents.
Looking to strike first, the Runnin' Bulldogs broke out on the offensive attack in the opening minutes of the match, recording three shots within the first twelve minutes. Using the home crowd to their advantage, the Terriers would counter with shots from seniors
Ben Nickol and
Austin Tuggle, but neither were successful as Wofford was held off the board in the first half. Heading into the locker room, the score remained knotted at zero as both teams were not able to take a first half lead.
Coming out of the break, both teams continued to attempt shots on the opposing goal, but neither could find the perfect angle to score. Despite another shot from Tuggle in the 79
th minute, Gardner-Webb was able to take the lead late on a goal from Jorge Salgado in the 87
th minute, putting them out in front, 1-0. The Terriers would attempt one last comeback with shots from Nickol and freshmen
Adrian Roseth in the final minutes of the match, but would end up falling to the Runnin' Bulldogs by a final score of 1-0.
For Wofford, the offense performed equally with that of Gardner-Webb as both teams notched 11 total shots on the night. Tuggle, Nickol, Roseth, and sophomore
Ade Akinjogbin paced the Terrier attacks with two shots a piece while
Ole Berg,
Eduardo Velazco, and
Brandon Oddy added one shot each. Playing in his first match of 2019, redshirt sophomore
Grant Wollam also recorded three saves in goal.
The Terriers will resume play on Tuesday, September 17 when they hit the road for a showdown with High Point at 7:00 pm. Wofford's next home match is scheduled for Tuesday, September 24 at 7:00 pm when they host Charlotte.
