SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford volleyball team had its 2019 home opener on Wednesday, sweeping Presbyterian College 26-24, 28-26, 24-17.
The Terriers were led by
Catie Cronister, who recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs, and
Lorissa King who dished out a season-high 32 assists. With her 12 digs, Cronister became just the sixth Terrier to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs, totaling 1,425 kills and 1,007 digs so far in her career. Junior
Riley Coonan had a strong night, sending home 11 kills while freshman
Kennedy Smith totaled nine.
The first set was back and forth as the two sides were tied at 18-18 when Cronister and King each recorded a kill to put Wofford ahead by two. Presbyterian would rally to tie the set at 22-22, but a
Meghan Yaffa kill and an error put the Terriers just one point away from claiming the set. The Blue Hose once again tied the score (24-24), but this time a Yaffa kill and an error gave Wofford the set victory.Â
Looking to even up the match, Presbyterian jumped out to a four-point lead, but a 6-0 run quickly gave the Terriers a two-point advantage. The Blue Hose continued to stay close, extending the set three times before consecutive kills from Cronister and Yaffa put Wofford ahead two sets to none.
In the third set, it was all Wofford from the start, blitzing Presbyterian to the tune of 12-3. The Blue Hose cut the deficit to six, but a pair of errors gave the momentum back to the Terriers who would take the third set 25-17.
Wofford returns to the court on Friday, facing North Carolina A&T State (10 a.m.) and Alabama A&M (7 p.m.) in the Wofford Invitational.
