SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team picked up two victories on Friday, defeating North Carolina A&T and Alabama A&M on day one of the 2019 Wofford Invitational.
The Terriers defeated North Carolina A&T in four sets (25-13, 25-21, 17-25, 25-16) before taking down the Bulldogs in four sets as well (25-20, 25-15, 26-24, 25-19).
Catie Cronister (24),
Meghan Yaffa (23) and
Kennedy Smith (21) led the attack for Wofford on Friday, while
Lorissa King totaled 84 assists in eight sets played.
Match 1 – Wofford 3, N.C. A&T 1
- Cronister has team-high 13 kills, four service aces
- Lorissa King posts double-double with 34 assists, 11 digs
- Nine different Terriers recorded at least one kill
Wofford was in control early, taking a 7-1 lead after a pair of kills from Cronister. The Aggies would cut the deficit to four but the Terriers slowly pulled away, claiming the first set 25-13 via a kill from
Kennedy Smith.
Wofford jumped ahead early in the second set, but North Carolina A&T would remain close, trailing by just two when Fatimah Shabazz recorded a kill that made the score 13-11. With the score 23-19, the Aggies took back-to-back points as they looked to extend the set, put a pair of errors gave Wofford the 2-0 lead.
North Carolina A&T came out swinging in the third, taking a 9-5 lead. Wofford rallied to take the next three points, but could not get any closer as the Aggies claimed the third 25-17.
The two teams matched each other point-for-point to start the fourth. With the score knotted up at 10-10, a pair of errors and a Cronister kill gave Wofford a three-point advantage. The Terriers slowly extended their lead, taking four of the last five points as
Riley Coonan sent home the match-clinching kill.
Match 2 – Wofford 3, Alabama A&M 1
- King dishes out season-high 50 assists
- Smith records first career double-double with 14 kills, 10 digs
- Emily Durham matches career-high with 18 digs
Wofford and Alabama A&M went point-for-point to start the first set, with the Bulldogs jumping out to a three-point lead near the halfway point. The Terriers would even the match up at 17-17, finally claiming the lead with a pair of aces from Cronister. Leading 22-19, Wofford took three of the next four points as Smith ended set one with a kill.
The Terriers dominated set two from the tip, jumping out to 12-2 lead and never looking back. Looking to extend the match, Alabama A&M took a 13-11 lead after a kill from Alana Cox. After a pair of kills from
Kara Shacklette knotted up the score at 24-24, two Wofford errors would clinch the set for the Bulldogs.
