SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team completed a perfect weekend, defeating Gardner-Webb in four sets on Saturday to improve to 3-0 in the 2019 Wofford Invitational.
Catie Cronister and Riley Coonan led the Terrier attack with 14 kills, while Kelly Bossert sent home 12 kills in four sets. Emily Durham had a team-high 15 digs and Lorissa King dished out 40 assists.
Coonan earned Wofford Invitational MVP honors, totaling 24 kills and 11 blocks in 10 sets played for the Terriers. The junior is joined on the all-conference team by her teammates Cronister (38 kills) and Meghan Yaffa (23 kills).
Wofford and Gardner-Webb traded points to open the match, with the Terriers pulling ahead 17-15 after a pair of aces from Cronister. The Runnin' Bulldogs would cut the deficit to one, but back-to-back kills from Coonan swung the momentum back to Wofford, grabbing the four-point victory after Kara Shacklette sent home her second kill of the set.
The Terriers jumped out in front 5-1 to open the second set, pushing the lead to five after a kill from Coonan. Gardner-Webb rallied to tie the set at 19-19 when Kennedy Smith sent home a kill that helped lift Wofford to another 25-21 set victory.
Looking to force a fourth set, Gardner-Webb took control of the third early, taking a 15-7 lead. The Terriers mounted a comeback, making the score 24-22, but an error clinched the set for the Runnin' Bulldogs. After trading points early in the fourth, Wofford would take a 17-13 lead and extend it to nine after two kills from Coonan, winning the set and the match via Cronister's 14th kill of the day.
The Terriers improve to 5-6 on the season, traveling to Davidson next Friday to compete in the Davidson Invitational on September 20-21.
