BUIES CREEK, N.C.- The Wofford women's soccer team (3-3-0) was defeated by Campbell, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at Campbell University Soccer Stadium. After their match versus USC Upstate was postponed on Friday due to weather, the Terriers fell victim to an early goal by the Camels and were not able to mount a comeback on the road.
Despite a shot in the 10
th minute of the game from
Katie Gilligan, the Southern Conference's current leader in total points and goals, Wofford trailed as early as the 17
th minute after a goal by Alexa Dennis made the score, 1-0, in favor of Campbell. The Terriers would respond with an offensive attack that included another shot from Gilligan and two shots from junior
Lucy Johnson, but ultimately were not able to put points on the board as they trailed at halftime by a score of 1-0.
Aiming to cut the deficit in the second half, sophomore
Savannah Vathy came out firing for Wofford, recording a shot on goal in the 50
th minute of the match.
Paige Miller and
Caroline Thompson would also attempt shots on the opposing goal, but the Terriers could not slow down the offense of Campbell as goals from Amber Liston (62
nd minute) and Siara Southerland (74
th minute) extended the Camels lead to 3-0. Freshman
Clare Davis joined the action with a shot of her own, but Campbell would tack on yet another goal in the closing minutes of the contest behind the strength of their home crowd. The Terriers would not be able to mount a final comeback, falling to the Camels by a final score of 4-0.
Overall, Gilligan, Johnson and freshman
McKenzie Guest paced the Wofford offense with two shots a piece, followed by one shot each from Vathy, Miller, Thompson, Davis and freshman
Abigail McKenzie. Sophomore
Maria Mon also recorded eight saves in goal for the Terriers.
Wofford will resume play Wednesday, September 18 when they take on USC Upstate at 7:00 pm. This match is rescheduled from Friday, September 13 after the contest was postponed due to inclement weather in the area. The Terriers next home match is scheduled for Friday, October 4 against VMI.
