Terriers sweep day two of Wildcat Classic

Coonan, Cronister named to all-tournament team

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Wofford volleyball team completed play at the Davidson Invitational on Saturday, topping the tournament-host Wildcats in a five-set thriller before topping Jacksonville in four sets.

Riley Coonan and Catie Cronister were named to the all-tournament team as the Terriers went 2-1 overall in the Wildcat Classic. Coonan totaled 34 kills, 10 blocks and five digs in the three matches, while Cronister had a team-high 41 kills to go with 26 digs and six aces.

The Terriers are now 7-7 on the season and return home to host Samford in their SoCon opener on Friday at 6 p.m.

MATCH 1 – Wofford 3, Davidson 2 (25-20, 16-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-6) The first set began with the two sides trading points, but a 7-0 run gave the Terriers a 13-6 lead. Davidson responded, knotting the set up at 15-15 before Coonan and Cronister recorded back-to-back kills. Cronister took over from here, sending home five more kills including the set-winner to put Wofford ahead 1-0.

Looking to take their momentum into the second, the Terriers scored four of the first five points in set two. A 6-0 run for the Wildcats put Davidson ahead by one as it slowly began to create distance between the two sides, grabbing the second set by nine. The third set mirrored the second to start, with the teams matching each other until the set was tied at 16-16. Five consecutive errors by Davidson made the score 21-16 in favor of Wofford, but the Wildcats rallied back, winning 9-of-11 points to take a 2-1 lead.

Aiming the even the match up, Wofford took a 15-10 lead. The Wildcats attempted to climb back into the set, but kills from four different Terriers gave Wofford a 19-13 advantage. The Terriers would close out the set via a kill from Kennedy Smith, forcing a decisive fifth set.

Wofford jumped out to a 4-0 lead, pushing the score to 10-4 after a kill from Coonan. The Terriers would claim the set and the match 15-6, getting kills from Coonan, Smith and Cronister to clinch the win.

MATCH 2 - Wofford 3, Jacksonville 2 (27-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-22)

  • Kennedy Smith led team with 14 kills, Cronister and Coonan each recorded 11
  • Team totaled eight aces, 6.0 blocks
After falling behind early, Jacksonville rallied to take an 11-9 lead over the Terriers. Wofford responded by taking five of the next six points and forcing a timeout by the Dolphins. After a service ace from Smith, Wofford held a 21-18 advantage but five unanswered points for Jacksonville prompted a timeout from Lynze Roos. Cronister sent home a kill to tie the set at 24-24 as the Terriers clinched the 27-25 victory via a kill from Smith.

The second set was close to start but Wofford slowly established distance between the two sides, forcing a timeout after Coonan sent home a kill that made the score 15-9. Wofford continued to hold serve, ending the set with kills from Kelly Bossert and Smith.

The Terriers jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but squandered it falling behind 15-11 before dropping the set by three. In the fourth, Wofford took another early lead only to have Jacksonville knot it up. With the score tied at 12, the Terriers scored five unanswered to take a 17-12 lead. The Dolphins would rally and make the score 19-18, forcing a timeout from Wofford. The Terriers extended their lead, claiming the set and the match after kills from Cronister and Claire Meier.
