SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford volleyball team dropped a hard fought match to Samford on Friday night, falling to the Bulldogs in four sets (26-24, 12-25, 13-25, 28-30).
Catie Cronister led the way with 16 kills, while
Lorissa King totaled 35 assists to go with eight digs.
Kara Shacklette provided a spark off the bench for Wofford, totaling five kills and three blocks.
Wofford falls to 8-7 (0-1 SoCon) overall but will return to the court on Saturday, hosting Mercer at 6 p.m.
Wofford struck first, taking a 3-0 lead before Samford climbed back to tie the set at 8-8. The Bulldogs would take a brief lead, but a 4-0 run put the Terriers ahead by three. Samford charged back, going ahead 21-19 before Wofford scored four unanswered points. With the set knotted up at 24-24, Cronister sent home back-to-back kills that gave Wofford a 1-0 lead.Â
The second set was all Samford, going on a 7-1 run to take a commanding 12-5 lead and take the second set. Set number three was back and forth, but the turning point came at 8-8 as the Bulldogs reeled off six points in a row, keeping Wofford at bay and going up two sets to one.Â
The Terriers looked primed to force a fifth set, jumping out to a 9-3 advantage and forcing a Samford timeout. The Bulldogs responded out of the break, taking the next five points. Wofford would push its lead back to six, only to have Samford rally to within one point.
Riley Coonan recorded a kill that made it 24-22 in favor of the Terriers, but Samford tied the set three times, claiming the set and the match after a pair of kills.
