Volleyball Earns 3-1 Win Over Mercer

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  - The Wofford volleyball team earned a 3-1 win over Mercer on Saturday night at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Terriers dropped the first set before winning the next three for the victory (17-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-12).  Catie Cronister led the way with 21 kills, while Meghan Yaffa had 40 assists.
 
Wofford improves to 8-8 overall (1-1 SoCon) and will return to the court on Friday, October 4, at Furman. Mercer falls to 8-7 and 1-1 in the league.
 
After the first set was tied at four, the Bears took a 14-8 lead before the Terriers called a timeout. Mercer extended the lead to 23-12 but the Terriers held off the Bears for four set points before falling 25-17.
 
Mercer had an early 7-1 lead in the second set, but Wofford rallied to take an 11-10 lead. With ties at 11, 13, 15, and 16, the Terriers were able to take a 19-16 advantage after three straight attack errors. With the score at 21-19, Wofford had two kills by Catie Cronister and a service ace by Meghan Yaffa to bring up set point. An attack error gave Wofford the 25-19 win.  
 
In the third set, Wofford jumped out to a 6-2 lead and pushed the advantage to 12-4. Mercer rallied with five straight points to make it 12-9, but the Terriers pushed the lead back to 16-11. With a 20-15 score, the Bears scored five in a row to tie the set at 20-20. The teams were tied again at 22 and 23, but Wofford scored on an attack error and then a kill by Catie Cronister sealed the 25-23 victory in the third set.
 
 
The fourth set was tied at six early before the Terriers took a 14-10 lead. Wofford scored to make it 15-10 and the Bears called a timeout. Wofford won the next six points to go up 21-10. With a 23-12 advantage, a kill by Riley Coonan and an attack error ended the match.
