SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It was another balanced effort for the Wofford men's basketball team on Saturday night, as four players reached double figures as the Terriers held off The Citadel for a 73-71 victory over The Bulldogs.
"I've always admired The Citadel's fight," said Wofford head coach Jay McAuley. "We had our moments to close the game and we just kind of got away from our gameplan defensively and they made it interesting there late, but we'll be better."
Nathan Hoover's hot shooting continued, leading the Terriers with 19 points while Tray Hollowell scored 12 and Chevez Goodwin and Isaiah Bigelow each contributed 11. Kaelon Harris did his best to keep the Bulldogs in the game, scoring a game-high 32 points on 8-of-10 shooting from 3-point range. The Terriers shot 41.1 percent from the floor, but just 25.9 percent from 3-point range, grabbing 38 rebounds and handing out 12 assists.
"I've just been in the gym a lot," Hoover said of working on his shot. "I've been talking to Fletcher (Magee) and he just told me don't worry about it, keep being confident and you know it's going to fall."
Wofford improves to 11-6 overall, moving to 3-1 in Southern Conference play, while The Citadel drops to 6-9 (0-4 SoCon). The Terriers hit the road for their next contest, traveling to Chattanooga for a matchup with the Mocs on Wednesday night.
The three-ball was falling for Wofford early, with Hoover, Hollowell, Storm Murphy and Bigelow all connecting from behind the arc as the Terriers jumped in front 20-15. The Citadel answered each time down the court, cutting the deficit to two with four minutes left in the first. Neither team scored much down the stretch, as Wofford went into the break leading 30-29.
"It's never easy against The Citadel," Hoover said. "You can't ever let up at all. And we just had to remain calm."
Goodwin got things going in the second, swatting his third shot of the contest and scoring inside. Goodwin scored a hook shot and fed Bigelow on the fast break as the Terriers took a 40-34 lead with just over 16 minutes to play. The Bulldogs kept it close, but Bigelow knocked down a trey and Jones hit a pair of free throws to push the Wofford lead to eight with 11:57 to play.
The Terriers began to pull away around the 10-minute mark, as Hollowell hit a step-back three and Goodwin scored an up-and-under to make the score 55-42. With The Citadel looking to make one last charge, Murphy scored a reverse layup and an elbow jumper to extend the lead to 13. The Citadel would not go down easy, going to the full-court press and cutting the lead to three (71-48) with six seconds to play, as Hoover knocked down a pair of free throws to seal the victory.
"It's just another free throw," Hoover said. "When you get in the gym and shoot enough free throws, you know when you get into the game it's just like you are shooting in an empty gym. You just gotta go up there and knock them down."
"We've just gotta be a little more consistent," McAuley said. "Our experiences the last two weeks will help us moving forward. I'm sure of that."
