Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Wofford battles, falls at Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The Wofford men's basketball team traveled to Chattanooga on Wednesday night, falling to the Mocs 72-59 at McKenzie Arena.

Nathan Hoover led Wofford with 20 points, with Chevez Goodwin scoring nine and Trevor Stumpe and Zion Richardson each totaling eight. After shooting just 15.4 percent from 3-point range and 30.7 percent from the floor in the first half, the Terriers shot 36.8 percent from 3-point range and 48.2 percent from the field in the second, outscoring the Mocs 39-29.

"Want to credit Chattanooga for coming out and being the aggressor," said Wofford head coach Jay McAuley. "We were not that tonight and they had a lot to do with it."

The loss snaps Wofford's three-game win streak, falling to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in Southern Conference play while Chattanooga moves to 12-6 and 3-2 in SoCon play. Wofford will have a quick turnaround, welcoming Furman to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Friday. The game, which tips off at 7 p.m., will be broadcast on ESPNU.

"We missed a lot of wide open shots today that normally go down," McAuley said. "And if we make some of those, I think it's a different ball game, but we've got to get to the point where that doesn't affect our body language."

The Mocs scored the first 10 points of the game before Hoover knocked down a jumper to get Wofford on the board. Richardson entered the game and scored five straight for the Terriers, but the Mocs kept the lead around 10 for the majority of the half. Down the stretch, the three ball was falling for Chattanooga, hitting four treys in the last five and a half minutes of play as the Mocs took a 43-20 lead into the break.

"If you're going to help us get stops, then you're going to stay on the floor," McAuley said of Zion.

Looking to put Wofford away, Chattanooga extended its lead before Messiah Jones and Richardson sparked a 10-0 run for the Terriers, forcing a timeout from the Mocs. Chattanooga would respond, jumping ahead 57-33 with less than 12 minutes to play.

"There was a stretch there where we went on a pretty good run and I thought it was because of our collective stops and rebounding as a group," said McAuley.

Wofford looked to mount one last rally, getting threes from Hoover and Stumpe and Larson before a dunk from Goodwin made the score 61-47 in favor of the Mocs. The Terriers forced a turnover and Stumpe went up-and-under to trim the lead to 12 with just under six to play, but a pair of 3-pointers from Matt Ryan and David Jean-Baptiste helped Chattanooga claim the victory.

"I think we are going to try and build off the second half and keep that momentum," McAuley said. "That's much more Wofford basketball than what we showcased in the first."
