Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Outstanding Defense Leads Terriers to First Road Win

Johnson City, TN – Wofford women's basketball team secured their first "Snack Time" of the season after knocking off ETSU, 76-47. The Terriers first road win brings their record to 9-10 (2-2 SoCon), and the Bucs fall to 6-13 (1-3 SoCon).

Jamari McDavid dominated the first minute of play as she scored the opening point on a free-throw. She then drew a charge on the defensive end and went down the floor and drained a jumper. Da'Ja Green then found Chloe Wanink for a trey from the wing to put Wofford up early, 6-0. Cairo Booker had a steal and finish, forcing the third straight turnover from ETSU, as Wofford led at the media timeout 8-4. The Terriers would go on a 6-0 run out of timeout with baskets from Alexis Tomlin, Cairo Booker, and Lawren Cook. A beautiful passing sequence just a minute later saw Wanink rattle in a three. The transition game was noticeable early as Tomlin got down the court and drew a foul, resulting in a free-throw make. After holding the Bucs scoreless in the final 3:20, Da'Ja Green ended the quarter with a layup to put Wofford up 20-7.

The 2nd quarter started with a Green triple, and then she fed Wanink for a three of her own, which put the Terriers up 28-15 at the media timeout. A couple of running shots would fall for Wofford as Wanink and Green connected again, this time in transition. A few moments later, Alexis Tomlin bodied up her defender and went strong to the rim for a reverse layup. Tomlin then found Niyah Lutz in the corner for an open trey. Both teams traded baskets to end the half, as Wofford led at the break 37-25.

Right out of halftime, Jamari McDavid spun around her defender for a layup, Chloe Wanink took one to the hoop and laid it in, and McDavid had herself a breakaway score after a steal, which forced ETSU into a timeout just one minute into the 3rd quarter. A few possessions later, Cairo Booker maneuvered her way to the rim for a layup, then scored off the glass to put the Terriers up 49-28 at the media timeout. Wofford ended the quarter on a 12-2 run with points coming from Tomlin and McDavid.

The Wofford bench came up large in the 4th quarter and sealed the victory. Lawren Cook shimmied by her defender as Niyah Lutz found her for a wide-open layup. Jamie Grob was left open in the paint and knocked down a jumper. Cook scored another layup after blowing by her defender again. Elena Pulanco found Alea Harris in the corner for a 3-pointer. Finally, MaryMartha Turner swished a jumper in for her first basket after Pulanco found her teammate again. The Terriers dribbled out the final minute of the game and won convincingly, 76-47.

Chloe Wanink and Jamari McDavid both scored in double figures with 15 and 13, respectively. Da'Ja Green had a game-high seven rebounds and five assists, while also shooting 50%. Wofford shot 45% as a team, scored 26 points off turnovers, and scored 33 points off the bench.

"I am so proud of our effort today. I thought our players followed the game plan extremely well, especially in the 1st and 3rd quarters", said head coach Jimmy Garrity. "I'm really happy for our players…they were hungry to get their first win on the road. We executed our keys to the game and that resulted in easy buckets for us, and that's what ultimately won us the game."

The Terriers return to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Thursday, January 23 to take on Western Carolina at 7:00 p.m.
