Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Booker Sets Career-High to Lift Terriers to Victory

Spartanburg, SC – The Wofford women's basketball team has had no problem taking care of Western Carolina at home in the past few years, as their 76-63 win on Thursday night now gives them seven wins out of the last eight against the Catamounts at home.

The Terriers, who have won three out of their last four overall, now sit back at .500 with a 10-10 record and a 3-2 conference mark. The Catamounts, who have struggled so far this season, move to 3-16 while still searching for their first SoCon win, sitting at 0-4.

Wofford was red hot to start out the game as they went 4-4 within the first three minutes, along with a pair of free-throws. Chloe Wanink hit two 3-pointers in the first minute to put the Terriers on top early. Lilly Hatton followed that up with two baskets of her own, one in the form of a layup and the other coming from outside the paint. After Cairo Booker knocked down two free-throws, Hatton made another shot from outside the paint to put the Terriers up 16-12 at the media timeout. The Terriers ended the quarter on a 13-2 run with clutch buckets coming from Niyah Lutz, Lawren Cook, Da'Ja Green, and Chloe Wanink. Wofford led after the 1st quarter 27-14.

It was a fairly dry 2nd quarter as far as scoring goes as both teams were strong defensively. Jamari McDavid had a pair of free-throws that gave Wofford their first points, four minutes in. Da'Ja Green made a tough layup as she created contact and banked it off the window for the Terriers second score of the quarter. Cairo Booker also had herself a layup, but it was the Catamounts who controlled the remaining 3:22 of the first half as Wofford only led by nine at the break, 33-24.

The Terriers wanted to come out in the 3rd quarter and make a statement, but it was very back-and-forth between the two squads. Booker and Hatton were the standouts for the first few minutes as they scored the first eight points for Wofford. Chloe Wanink found herself back on the scoresheet after a jumper from the left elbow. Cairo Booker came alive again as she scored six straight for the black and gold, and Da'Ja Green ended the quarter with a trey to give Wofford a 10-point lead, 55-45.

Wofford knew they had to put Western Carolina away, and put them away they did, mainly coming from behind the arc. Booker and Wanink combined for back-to-back triples to push the lead to 13. Da'Ja Green then got involved as she drained a 3-pointer to widen the gap even more, this time to 18. Booker nailed another three which put the team up 19, and with only 2:38 to go the Terriers were able to see their way out, winning by a final of 76-63.

Cairo Booker led the team and set a career-high with 25 points. She went 10-14, while hitting all three from three-point land, and going 2-2 from the free-throw line. Da'Ja Green collected her third double-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 10 assists. Lilly Hatton also had a career night as she recorded her first collegiate career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

"Really proud of our effort tonight and extremely proud of the way we played and grinded out for that win. Some great decisions were made on the offensive side of the ball and we played well defensively", said coach Garrity. "Cairo is so athletic and tonight she was able to break down her defender to finish on both sides of the rim, along with knocking down some big 3's. I'm so proud of Da'Ja and Lilly and their ability to play so well on both ends of the court, it's really special for them to get double-doubles. We made great decisions tonight, adjusted well in the 3rd and 4th quarters, and it will take our best effort to win on Saturday."
