Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Terriers Give Spartans First Conference Loss, Now on 3 Game Win Streak

Spartanburg, SC – Wofford women's basketball team won their third straight game Saturday afternoon after taking down UNCG and handing the Spartans their first conference loss of the season, with a 66-61 win.

This huge home victory sends the Terriers over.500 for the first time this season (11-10) and gives them a 4-2 conference mark. The Spartans first conference loss takes them to 15-5 overall, 4-1 in the SoCon.

Da'Ja Green kicked things off with a drive by layup followed by a Cairo Booker 3-pointer to put Wofford ahead early, 5-2. Green quickly added on with a free-throw and Lilly Hatton swished in a deep 2-pointer. The Spartans managed to even things up, but the Terriers came right back with Lawren Cook scoring a layup directly after her own rebound, and Niyah Lutz who drilled a trey in transition. Chloe Wanink hit a nice floater with just over a minute to go, but UNCG had the lead at the end of the 1st quarter, 20-17.

The 2nd quarter started with UNCG going on a 6-0 run, which was quickly abrupted by Chloe Wanink driving the lane and laying it in. Da'Ja Green made a contested jumper with the defender right in front of her, but at the media timeout Wofford trailed 32-21. Fast break scoring was the plan of attack late in the 2nd quarter as Green and Wanink both made shots as time winded down in the first half, but the Terriers were still behind 40-27.

Wofford began the 3rd quarter on a 9-2 run, started by Da'Ja Green again. She nailed a three from the wing, then pulled up in the paint on the fast break as the momentum started to shift. Cairo Booker sank both her free-throws and Lilly Hatton swirled in a 14-footer from the corner, as the Terriers trimmed the lead to six at the media timeout. Chloe Wanink made a huge triple after the offensive rebound and kick-out by Cairo Booker, and Jamari McDavid put up a layup after the find from Da'Ja Green. Alexis Tomlin finished off the quarter with a layup of her own as Wofford was only down three going into the 4th quarter.

A 6-0 run by the Terriers at the start of the 4th quarter saw them take the lead. Jamari McDavid made good positioning down low to get open room for a layup and Da'Ja Green made four free-throws to push Wofford ahead 49-48. Wofford stretched their lead to six after the 3-ball started raining down from Booker, Green, and Wanink. With 2:01 to go, Alexis Tomlin came up with some clutch free-throws after she replaced Lilly Hatton who had fouled out. Free-throws became the name of the game from there on out as UNCG had to keep fouling to try and spark any kind of a comeback, but Wofford had other plans. Cairo Booker and Da'Ja Green both had ice in their veins down the stretch as they made free-throws as the clock continued to tick down. Relentless defense by the Terriers forced turnovers and bad shots out of the Spartans late, and Wofford was able to comeback and win a massive SoCon matchup 66-61.

Da'Ja Green was called upon all game long as she played all 40 minutes and had a game-high 22 points. Cairo Booker added 13 and Chloe Wanink had 12, along with four Terriers who tied for a team-high in rebounds with six.

"I'm unbelievably proud of our effort today. We were down 13 at half, but we just reassured them that we were playing good basketball", said coach Jimmy Garrity. "Our defense gave them some trouble and pressured them into some turnovers that resulted in big buckets for us. I thought the charges we took got the crowd and our players into it…our bench was unbelievable, and their positive influence gave us the drive to win. As far as next week goes, it will take our best effort to win."
