Spartanburg, SC – The Wofford women's basketball was down at halftime, but once again the team showed plenty of fight and toughness to power their way to another late victory, 66-62. Wofford, who now sits at 5-2 in the SoCon, takes sole control of 3
rd place, while Furman (4-3) is in a tie for 4
th with Chattanooga.
The Terriers jumper out to an early lead after
Jamari McDavid ran down the court and laid it in from a
Chloe Wanink pass, and
Da'Ja Green pulled up from outside the paint and rattled it in. Green made a similar shot on the following possession, and Wanink made a runner from the free-throw line for a 8-4 lead.
Lilly Hatton and
Chloe Wanink combined for two more buckets, but the Terriers trailed at the end of the 1
st quarter, 14-12.
Furman came out in the 2
nd quarter with back-to-back baskets, but
Chloe Wanink swirled in a three which kept it a one-possession game. The Paladins pushed the lead to seven, but
Jamari McDavid and
Chloe Wanink hit key shots to cut the lead to two.
Niyah Lutz subbed into the game and made an immediate impact with a driving layup, and
Da'Ja Green hit a 3-pointer as time winded down, as Wofford was only down three, 30-27.
Again, it was Furman who increased their lead slightly, but
Cairo Booker made the first free-throws of the game to keep it a one-score game. Booker nailed a deep three just moments later, then she created a turnover and scored on the fast break which gave the Terriers a 38-35 lead.
MaryMartha Turner was put into the game and scored on her first shot, a corner jumper which kept Wofford ahead.
Alexis Tomlin made shots on two straight possessions which gave Wofford a seven-point lead. Furman would go on a 9-1 run to end the quarter and retook the lead, 46-45.
Just in similar fashion from last week against UNCG, the Terriers fought their way back in the 4
th quarter. Even though they continued to trail in the 4
th, they kept fighting with everything they had and eventually took the lead. Tough made shots from Wanink, Green, and Tomlin cut the deficit to three, and
Jamari McDavid swished a triple from the top of the key to tie it at 54 apiece.
Alexis Tomlin followed that up with a deep two as Wofford was now ahead 56-54. There were a few ties in the remaining minutes, but the Terriers had no intentions of losing.
Da'Ja Green made a pair from the stripe, and
Lilly Hatton dropped in a outside jumper with 19 seconds to go.
Chloe Wanink was given the task of icing the game with two free-throws with 2.4 remaining, as Wofford won another close contest 66-62.
Chloe Wanink led the floor with 18 points, going 7-10 and 2-4 from beyond the arc.
Cairo Booker,
Da'Ja Green, and
Alexis Tomlin all scored in double figures as well. Wanink, Booker, and Green all had four assists, and
Lilly Hatton had a game-high three blocks.
"That was a big time win for us. It's always tough against Furman, their always one of the best teams in the conference, but we did the things we needed to do to get the win", said coach
Jimmy Garrity. "Even though we were down at half, we never gave up and continued to believe in each other and knew we were going to play better. We got a lot of favorable matchups and we were able to convert late in the game."
The Terriers will travel to Mercer and Samford next Thursday/Saturday for their final extended road trip of the season.
