Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Win Streak Snapped as Terriers Fall at Mercer

Macon, GA – The Wofford women's basketball team battled until the very end, but ultimately fell in the final seconds to Mercer, 54-53. The loss snaps a 4-game win streak for the Terriers and brings their record to 12-11 (5-3), and Mercer's win takes them to 5-18 (2-6).

It was a quick start for Wofford as right after the tip, Da'Ja Green pulled up from 18 feet and swished a jumper. On the next possession, Jamari McDavid took it to the baseline and finished with a nice reverse layup. McDavid was tough to stop again as she collected an offensive rebound and scored the put-back, but Wofford trailed at the media timeout, 9-6. Chloe Wanink sank her first shot of the game, a 3-pointer from Cairo Booker to ties things back up. McDavid found herself in the paint once more as she drew contact and was able to lay it in. Da'Ja Green ended the 1st quarter with a layup, but Wofford was down by two, 16-14.

The Terriers were able to tie the game in the 2nd quarter after scores from Lilly Hatton and Cairo Booker. First it was Booker who found Hatton in the corner for a deep two, then Booker took it herself in transition and made the easy layup. Hatton put her name in the assist column as she saw Niyah Lutz open who banked one in, but the Terriers were still behind 23-20. Mercer went on a 12-0 run before Alea Harris scored a running floater over her defender, which brought the score to 31-22 at halftime.

Wofford came out firing to start the 3rd quarter as Jamari McDavid got the pass from Cairo Booker and made no mistake, swishing it right through. McDavid returned the favor as she gave it off to Lilly Hatton who had an open layup. Booker found McDavid once again to cut it to a one-score game. Mercer was forced to take a timeout after Da'Ja Green somehow made her shot after getting mauled in the paint. A 10-0 run by the Terriers was capped off with Booker driving the lane to give Wofford their first lead since the 1st quarter, 32-31. Mercer came back with an 8-0 run of their own and regained the lead 41-34 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Cairo Booker scored the first six points for Wofford in the 4th quarter after a pair of layups and two free-throws. The game went quiet until Jamari McDavid swished her two free-throws to keep it a one-score game. Lilly Hatton caught fire late as she rattled in a trey and drained one from the corner. She banked in a deep three to make it 54-53, but the Terriers were unable to comeback as time expired before they could get a final shot off.

Lilly Hatton scored her second double-double of the season. She led the team with 14 points, with 2-3 coming from beyond the arc, and 12 rebounds. Jamari McDavid had 13 points and Cairo Booker added 11 to the scoresheet. Booker also had a game-high six assists.

"I give Mercer a lot of credit. They did the "little things" better than we did and that's what won them the game", said coach Garrity. "We struggled today, but the good thing is we have a quick turnaround for the game on Saturday and we'll do our best to correct those mistakes."
