Historic Win as Terriers Down First Place Samford

Birmingham, AL – Wofford's women's basketball team made history Saturday afternoon as they won their first ever game at Samford in program history by a 69-63 margin. The win puts Wofford in a tie for first place in the SoCon along with Samford and UNCG, all three teams sitting at 6-3.

Jamari McDavid started the game off with an offensive rebound and a put-back for the opening points. She then stole the ball in the defensive zone and fed Cairo Booker for a three in transition. After a Samford miss, Da'Ja Green saw Lilly Hatton who spun around in the paint and banked one in. Cairo Booker connected with another 3-pointer on the following possession as the Terriers had a 10-9 lead at the media timeout. Out of the timeout, Chloe Wanink was left wide open and drilled a trey to extend Wofford's lead. Booker and Green added four more in the last two minutes to give Wofford a 19-13 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

It was a slow start to the 2nd quarter for both teams, but Niyah Lutz and Da'Ja Green made a pair of layups to increase the Terriers' lead. Chloe Wanink added another triple as the ball bounced and rattled its way in. The 3-ball kept falling for Wofford as Niyah Lutz swirled her shot in, which gave them a 29-25 advantage with 3:23 left in the half. Chloe Wanink would not be denied from beyond the arc as she made two more treys to keep the Terriers ahead in the final minute of the half, which gave Wofford a 35-31 lead at the break.

The 3rd quarter started the exact same as the first as Jamari McDavid snatched an offensive rebound and laid it in. Lilly Hatton nailed a three as she slipped out from the paint away from her man and extended the lead. Hatton then made a floater from five feet to give the Terriers a nine-point lead. A couple of 3-pointers from Samford cut into the lead as Wofford had a 44-42 lead at the 3rd quarter media timeout. Chloe Wanink continued to be perfect from three-point land as she made her fifth 3-ball of the game to keep Wofford in front. Samford would come back and end the 3rd quarter on a 6-0 run to give them the lead, 52-50.

Da'Ja Green led off the 4th quarter with a deep three as the shot clock hit zero to keep Wofford within one possession. After some hard-fought battles in both the offensive and defensive zones, Alexis Tomlin was found by Chloe Wanink for a layup to retake the lead. With emotions running high in the battle for 1st place, Wofford trailed at the media timeout 58-56. Lilly Hatton was able to tie the game at 58 when she grabbed an offensive rebound and put it off the window and in. The Terriers quickly took the lead back again when Jamari McDavid scored a step-back jumper. Wofford added to their run as Hatton sank a three from the top of the key forcing Samford into a timeout. After a clutch rebound from Jamari McDavid, Wofford elected to take a timeout with 1:19 remaining, holding a 63-60 lead. Da'Ja Green made both of her free-throws with 39 seconds to go, bumping the lead to five. With the game coming down to the charity stripe, Wofford's Chloe Wanink made four free-throws to stretch the lead too far for Samford to come back, and the Terriers won 69-63.

Chloe Wanink led the floor with 19 points, all of her makes coming from beyond the arc. Jamari McDavid added 10 and Lilly Hatton had 12, with three of her points coming in the most clutch time. McDavid and Green had a team-high six rebounds, and Green also led the team with seven assists.

"Really proud of our team today against a really good Samford team. It's a special moment to come into a place where we've never won and come out with a victory", said coach Jimmy Garrity. "I thought we did a really good job taking care of the ball down the stretch, no turnovers in the 2nd half was key. We stayed together as a team, through our highs and lows, and even though it's a long ride back home, it's going to be a fun one!"

Wofford returns home on Thursday, February 13, as they host East Tennessee State at 7:00 p.m. at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
