BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wofford men's basketball team went on the road and defeated Samford on Wednesday night, holding off the Bulldogs and hitting free throws down the stretch to top the Bulldogs 67-62 in the Pete Hanna Center.
Wofford shot 46.6 percent from the floor, holding Samford 13.3 percent 3-point shooting in the second half (2-15) and just 24 percent for the game. The Terriers forced 17 turnovers, handing out 11 assists in the process. With the victory, Wofford improves to 10-6 overall and 2-1 in Southern Conference play, handing Samford its first SoCon loss of the season (8-9, 2-1).
"I'm glad we came out with the win," said Wofford head coach Jay McAuley. "We're going to have to be a lot better. We gifted them a lot of points in the first half. They dominated us on the offensive glass and that can't happen, but I thought our older guys stepped up."
Chevez Goodwin scored a career-high 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting, hauling in nine rebounds while Nathan Hoover totaled a game-high 22 points and five rebounds, drawing five fouls in the process. Senior Trevor Stumpe made big plays all game, totaling 11 points, five rebounds, one block and one steal in the win.
"It's never easy to get a road win in this league," Goodwin said. "It doesn't matter where you go. Road wins are big in this league and every win is big down the stretch."
Goodwin was locked in early, helping Wofford to a 5-0 lead before Samford scored nine unanswered. Hoover and Donovan Theme-Love connected to pull Wofford to within two, but Samford knocked down a 3-pointer to make the score 23-18.
Stumpe got into the mix, scoring a reverse layup and hitting a 3-pointer to even the sides at 23 apiece. The Bulldogs pulled ahead by five, but Goodwin scored down low and Bigelow hit a trey that cut the deficit to one before a Jalen Dupree dunk made the score 35-32 in favor of Samford at the break.
Hoover came out firing in the second, hitting two 3-pointers and a pair of free throws as the Terriers took their first lead since early in the first half (42-41). With the game tied at 49-49, Goodwin converted a pair of putback layups and scored on a post up that put Wofford ahead 55-52.
"To say I was spirited at halftime is an understatement," said McAuley. "We still have to grow in a lot of areas, as do most teams, but we have to be about toughness, defense and rebounding, How about Trevor Stumpe late? So many big rebounds. Chevez Goodwin with big rebounds all game and Nathan Hoover was fantastic tonight."
Stumpe connected on a baseline jumper and Storm Murphy hit an elbow jumper as the Terriers held a two-point advantage. The next trip down the floor, Murphy fed Goodwin for a slam that made 61-57 Wofford. Moments later, Theme-Love found Goodwin for another slam as the Terriers clung to a one-point lead.
"He's probably our best at guarding Sharkey," McAuley said of Theme-Love. "Donovan did a good job of handling some things and made some nice interior passes. Donovan helped us win tonight."
With 33.7 seconds to play, Josh Sharkey drove to the lane but Goodwin and company forced a miss, with Isaiah Bigelow getting fouled on the ensuing inbounds and hitting two free throws, with Stumpe grabbing the final rebound and knocking down two from the charity stripe as Wofford took the five-point victory.
"We had to bring our energy like we always do," Goodwin said. "But I think we found ourselves in a good spot in the second half. We knew that we had to come out here and play hard and nothing was going to be given to us. We came out, got the lead and just grinded it out the rest of the way through."
The Terriers return to the floor on Saturday, welcoming The Citadel to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium for a 7 p.m. tip.
