NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Wofford College men's and women's cross country teams opened the season on Friday afternoon at the Newberry Invitational. The men were third overall, while the women were fourth in the event.
The women's 5K race was held first and freshman
Alexus Atkins was fourth overall with a time of 19:22.0. She was followed by Janie Holecek (21:22.2),
Morgan Roberts (21:24.4),
Cassie Figueroa (22:17.9),
Quinn Fleming (22:20.3) and
Anastasia Burroughs (23:47.4).
For the men in the 8K,
Josh Hendry was third overall with a time of 26:27.0, behind two runners from East Tennessee State.
Beck Classey was also in the top ten at eighth place (26:58.7).
Ryan O'Malley was 20
th at 28:07.5, followed by
Carson Archie (28:19.4),
Demir Degirmenci (28:37.1),
Ford McCoy (28:43.3),
Jack Moody (29:21.2) and
Jack Graham (32:06.9).
"For the first meet of the season both teams did really well," said head coach
Johnny Bomar. "It was a tough course to open with, but I think we made progress and now have three weeks to prepare for the Southern Conference Championship."
Overall East Tennessee State was first in both the men's (39) and women's (33) races. They were followed by Anderson (43), Wofford (79), The Citadel (92), Flagler (105) and Edward Waters (190) in the men's event. Anderson (34), The Citadel (86), Wofford (89), Newberry (138) and Edward Waters (179) followed in the women's race.
The Terriers will compete in Macon, Georgia on Saturday, November 21 for the SoCon Championship.
