SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It has been nine months since the Terriers last saw action, but that layoff did not hinder them at all. Wofford's women's basketball team competed until the final whistle and came out on top with a 65-50 win.
"It is good to get that first one out of the way, under our belt, and even more satisfying to get a win", said head coach
Jimmy Garrity.
It took 34 seconds to get the first points of the season as
Niyah Lutz knocked down two free-throws after getting fouled in transition. Wofford added to their early lead as
Jackie Carman, playing her first game in almost two years, scored a three-point play for a 5-2 lead.
Helen Matthews scored her first collegiate points as she made a layup, part of a 11-2 run for the Terriers. Second chance points were the key to the end of the 1
st quarter, scoring six straight to make it 22-11 at the end of the quarter.
The teams battled to start the 2
nd quarter as it was difficult for either team to get into a rhythm.
Elena Pulanco scored a three-point play, followed by
Jamari McDavid's layup which gave the Terriers a double-digit lead again. Lutz scored a put-back after her offensive rebound, and Carman made a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to send Wofford into the locker room up by 12.
"Jackie's three was our only one of the half and despite them not falling for us, we got a lot of open looks and we know they'll go in next time", said Garrity.
The 2
nd half began with Winthrop going on a 12-2 run, forcing Wofford to call a timeout and regroup. The Terriers were able to get some points back after
Alexis Tomlin's free throws, and
Lawren Cook driving the paint and laying one in. Freshman
Abbey Crawford also collected her first collegiate rebound and a steal in the final minute of play.
Niyah Lutz took over the early part of the 4
th quarter scoring seven points in the first 1:05. Wofford went on a 10-1 run for the next six minutes which put the game to bed. Points from McDavid, Carman, Lutz, and Matthews solidified the win for the Terriers.
"I think our bench was unbelievable today, not only their production on the court, but their effect off it too. With no fans, they are the ones to be heard and their enthusiasm and excitement drove our team today", Garrity said.
Niyah Lutz led the way for the team scoring 17 points, followed by
Jackie Carman who had 10.
Alexis Tomlin came off the bench and had a team-high seven rebounds, while
Lilly Hatton,
Helen Matthews, and Carman all had six. The Terriers had a total of 48 rebounds, 23 offensive and 25 defensive, which led to 12 second chance points and 17 points on the fast break.
"We took care of the ball well, and to hold Winthrop to under 55 points with 40 plus rebounds, we put ourselves in a really good position to win and we did", Garrity mentions. "I think the biggest thing is having the one game under our belt and getting used to playing someone else because it's been a long time."
