CHARLESTON, S.C. – Being down 23 at the break, the Wofford women's basketball team showed plenty of fight to get close in the second half, but were unable to complete the comeback as they fell 69-61 to the College of Charleston.
The game started with two strong possessions for the Terriers as they collected three offensive rebounds en route to a
Jamari McDavid layup. Another three offensive rebounds would give the offense more chances, but they were unable to convert.
Alexis Tomlin was finally able to get the team back on the board with a layup, bringing some energy back to Wofford. Tomlin would score once again along with
MaryMartha Turner to bring Wofford to single digits. The 1
st quarter would end with the Terriers down 18-8.
Niyah Lutz would hit two 3-pointers for Wofford which brought it to a nine-point game. An 8-0 run by the Cougars forced coach Garrity to take a timeout. Lutz knocked down a free-throw and scored a layup for a little bit of momentum.
Jackie Carman,
MaryMartha Turner, and
Helen Matthews all made free-throws as that was Wofford's only production the last three minutes of the half. The Terriers trailed at the break 41-22.
Lutz continued to lead the team to start the 2
nd half as she combined with
Jamari McDavid to score her first basket of the game. The Terriers' defense was starting to step up as they forced three turnovers which led to a Tomlin jumper and a Lutz free-throw.
Alea Harris nailed a three and Tomlin converted a three-point play as Wofford put together an 13-2 run. Wofford ended the quarter on a good run of play going 3-3 in the final two minutes to cut it to a 13 point deficit.
Helen Matthews started the 4
th quarter with her first bucket of the game and drew a foul as the Terriers tried to turn the tide. Matthews added four more and McDavid scooped one in to cut the lead to nine. Matthews was not done as she drilled a trey forcing Charleston into a timeout. Wofford's defense stayed strong and tried to will the offense for the comeback. Lutz and McDavid made layups to make it an eight-point game with 45 seconds to go.
Alexis Tomlin finished with a team-high 13 points, while
Niyah Lutz added 12 and
Helen Matthews had 11.
Jamari McDavid grabbed the most rebounds for the Terriers with nine, with Lutz and Tomlin grabbing seven a piece.
"I thought we got a lot of good looks and we rebounded the ball very well. Sometimes the ball just doesn't fall and today that's what happened for us", said coach
Jimmy Garrity. "We showed a lot of toughness and heart coming back from half, it was just an unfortunate final result. We will learn from this game and come back better for Wednesday at High Point."
