Wofford Falls Short in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, OH – The Wofford women's basketball team was unable to make it three road wins in a row as they fell to Big East foe Xavier. The Terriers tried mounting a comeback in the 4th quarter, but was unable to come out on top in the end, falling 70-64.

The Terriers go to 3-2 on the season and Xavier moves to 2-0.

Lilly Hatton opened the scoring with a 3-pointer off a pass from Jackie Carman. Hatton contributed again from a foul and finished the three-point play to give the Terriers an early 6-3 lead. Hatton couldn't be stopped as she swished another trey, scoring all nine of Wofford's points up to the media timeout. Niyah Lutz knocked down two free-throws and MaryMartha Turner was left open under the rim for an easy layup with 2:00 to go in the 1st quarter. Elena Pulanco made two after she received a pass from Turner, but the Terriers trailed by one at the end of the quarter, 16-15.

Alexis Tomlin made the first bucket for Wofford in the 2nd quarter, taking the feed from Lutz and scoring from just inside the arc. Tomlin added a layup after getting an offensive rebound, but Wofford was down at the 2nd quarter media timeout, 27-20. Carman finally ended the scoreless run by hitting a corner three, cutting the Xavier lead to five. Tomlin added another layup late in the quarter, but the Terriers were down at half, 35-25.

Helen Matthews started the scoring in the 2nd half with an 8-foot jumper just inside the paint. Matthews was able to find McDavid waiting under the basket for a layup, but Wofford was now down by 15 midway through the 3rd quarter. Lutz scored off the glass out of the timeout and Carman hit a three from the wing for a little momentum. Lutz scored the final four points for Wofford in the quarter, the squad down 54-39 going into the final quarter.

Jackie Carman was able to get a quick steal that led to a layup on the other end to begin the 4th quarter. Three straight turnovers for the Musketeers led to Tomlin finishing with contact and forced Xavier into a timeout. Tomlin was relentless in the paint as she got fouled twice, but was only able to make one free-throw. Helen Matthews created a steal and finished as the Terriers were beginning to turn the tide, now down by 10. Tomlin and McDavid connected twice in the paint again to cut the Xavier lead to seven with 6:33 remaining. Carman caught net with a huge triple from the top of the key as Wofford took full control of the game. Xavier scored a quick four, but Alea Harris ended that with a layup, and Carman made both free-throws for a five-point game. As the clocked ticked under two minutes, Hatton banked one in after an offensive rebound cutting it to a one-score game. Wofford attempted to tie and take the lead late, but the ball would not fall and the final horn would sound, the Terriers falling 70-64.

Jackie Carman scored a season-high 14 points with Alexis Tomlin and Lilly Hatton tying their season-highs with 13 and 11, respectively. Tomlin led the team in rebounds with nine and in blocks with three, and Alea Harris had a game-high four steals.

"We gave it our all in the 4th quarter and we took it to them…we just can't fall that far behind that early against a good team like they are", said coach Garrity. "I'm proud of the way we came together in the final quarter. It's a tough pill to swallow, getting that close. But if we play every game like we played the 4th quarter today, we will come out on top."

Wofford's final game of 2020 will come against Kentucky on Saturday, December 19 at 1:00 pm.
