Terriers Offense Tripped up at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, KY – Wofford's women's basketball team had a tough time taking on Kentucky, the #9 ranked team in the country as they fell by a final of 98-37. The Terriers will begin the new year with an overall record of 3-3.

Wofford had plenty of good looks in the opening two minutes, but it was Kentucky who scored the first basket. Helen Matthews got the Terriers on the board with two free-throws to tie the score early on. Kentucky went on an 8-0 run before Lilly Hatton rolled in a three. It was a fast-paced 1st quarter as Wofford was down 12-5 with 3:04 left. Kentucky ended the quarter scoring nine straight, finishing the first of four, 21-5.

Matthews finally got the team back in the scoring column with a high floater that fell, but the Terriers were still struggling to find any source of offensive momentum. The Wildcats kept up there full-court pressure and made Wofford call a timeout, now down 30-7. Lawren Cook ended a 5:00 scoring drought for the Terriers with a layup, just the third basket up to this point. Jamari McDavid found herself at the line and made a pair in the final minute of the 2nd quarter. Wofford trailed at the end of the half, 48-11.

Niyah Lutz scored the first bucket for Wofford in the 3rd quarter with a corner 3-pointer. McDavid added a fading layup after grabbing an offensive rebound. The 3rd quarter media timeout came with Kentucky on a 15-0 run, the score at 71-16. Alexis Tomlin found herself on the scoreboard after she spun around her defender for a layup. Tomlin finished again at the rim after a steal and pass from Matthews. Matthews favored from a layup herself after the feed from MaryMartha Turner, and Tomlin made two more from the stripe. The Terriers ended the quarter on an 8-1 run, but were still behind 75-24.

Lilly Hatton ended a 6-0 Kentucky run at the start of the 4th quarter with a 12-foot jumper. The offense stumbled the following minutes after three straight charge calls. Jackie Carman made her first shot, swishing a trey from the wing after a baseline pass from Lutz, with just over five minutes to go. McDavid was able to end a scoreless spell for Wofford as she drove past two defenders and laid one in with the left hand. Carman was able to knock down her free-throws and converted on a steal-and-score, still showing the team had fight in the final minutes. Unfortunately, that was the final offense for the team, falling by a final of 98-37.

"They're one of the top teams in the country and they showed that. But when you turn the ball over as much as we did, it doesn't matter who you play, it's going to be hard to win", said head coach Jimmy Garrity. "We beat them the final few minutes of the 3rd quarter and that's something positive to look at. Despite the result, we can always learn from these types of games and better ourselves. This game doesn't define us as a team and we are excited about starting 2021."

The Terriers will return to the court on January 2, 2021, when they take on Erskine. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm inside Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
