Offense Turns up the Heat in Win Over Erskine

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team strapped on their shooting boots to open up 2021 and displayed plenty of offense in their 88-49 victory. The Terriers' 88 points is a team-high this season and they finish non-conference play with a winning record (4-3) for the second time in the past three years.

Wofford began the game with a quick four points as Jamari McDavid made a free-throw and Niyah Lutz knocked down a 3-pointer from Alea Harris. The team then went on a quick 8-0 run in just over a minute, getting scores from Harris, McDavid, and Lilly Hatton. The Terriers would hold a 14-11 lead for the next four minutes where both teams went scoreless. Alexis Tomlin checked into the game and made an immediate impact, rattling off the next eight points for the squad. Lawren Cook finished the quarter with a late layup giving the Terriers a 24-13 advantage.

With the starters back on the court to open up the 2nd quarter, McDavid found herself on the end of two of Harris's passes for breakaway layups in the first two minutes. Harris made a three moments later after the kick out by Jackie Carman for an 18-point lead. MaryMartha Turner made a jumper after she grabbed an offensive rebound to stop the short 5-0 run by the Flying Fleet. She then swished a free-throw to give Wofford a 44-24 lead into the break.

The 3rd quarter opened slow for both teams, but McDavid turned on the jets on multiple occasions for fast break layups to extend the lead. Hatton added a pair of layups as the Terriers began to take full control late in the quarter. Just like she did in the 1st quarter, Lawren Cook ended the scoring in the 3rd frame with a trey after two offensive rebounds, one by Alexis Tomlin and the other by Annabelle Schultz.

Schultz scored her first career points in the 2nd quarter, but caught fire in the 4th. She made three triples from the corner, grabbed four rebounds, and had three assists. Lilly Hatton also took over as she dominated the paint, scoring 10 points in just 5:38. The Terriers pulled away and capped off the game with an 8-0 run, winning by a final of 88-49.

Jamari McDavid finished with a season-high 19 points while also getting eight rebounds. Lilly Hatton scored a career-high 17 and Annabelle Schultz had 12 in her first collegiate game. Alexis Tomlin had a team-high 10 rebounds and Alea Harris had a career-high 10 assists. The team shot 43.6% from the field, the second highest mark in a game this season.

"It's a really good feeling to get a win to start 2021. With everything that's going on, there is no better feeling than to be playing, and winning", said Assistant Coach Mike Merrill. "We didn't play our best in the first half, but we made adjustments and finished the game off really strong. It was important that we gave all the girls plenty of time today because with conference play coming up, you're going to need to step up, fill in, and be ready at any moment. We're glad that we took care of business today and we are excited to begin conference play."

The Terriers will open up SoCon play with a date against crosstown rival Furman on January 9, 2021. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm inside Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
