MOBILE, Ala. - The Wofford men's golf team opened up its 2020 spring season at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, finishing in a tie for ninth place, while
Ryan Marter shot 3-under-par to finish tied for 19th place individually.
"The guys fought hard. There's a lot of good things to take out of this week," said Wofford men's golf coach
Alex Hamilton. "This is a very competitive event and it sets a good example of what this team can do."
The Terriers opened up on Monday with a round-one 290, but bounced back in the second to card a 280. On Tuesday, Wofford capped off its first spring tournament by posting a 295, finishing 7-over-par and tied with Illinois State for ninth place in the tournament.
"Round two we were able to post the second lowest round as a team, beating numerous top 30 and NCAA regional teams," Hamilton said.
Marter was consistent all tournament, opening up with a round-one 71 (1-under-par) that featured birdies on holes No. 3, No. 5 and No. 16. In round two on Monday, Marter carded a 2-under-par 70, closing out the tournament by firing an even-par 72, birdieing holes No. 4, No. 6 and No. 18 to finish with a 213 overall.
Matthew Copeland opened up his spring with a 1-under-par (215) effort to finish tied for 33rd place. Copeland struggled a bit in round one, shooting a 2-over-par 74, but bounced back strong in round two, erasing 2-over-par by shooting a 2-under-par 70. The sophomore capped off his tournament with a 1-under-par 71 in round three, birdieing a pair of holes (12, 16) on the back nine.
Freshman
Carlos Garre totled a 4-over-par 220, opening with a round-one 74 before carding a very strong 3-under-par 69. Garre would post a 77 in round three to finish tied for 51st individually.
Matthew Larkin would round out the scoring for the Terriers, firing an opening-round 71 before finishing 6-over-par (222) for the tournament.
"Our par-5 scoring got a little loose today," Hamilton said. "Other than that, we played very well."
Wofford returns to the course on February 24, competing in the Wexford Invitational.
