Terriers Drop Heartbreaker Against Mocs on Senior Day

Spartanburg, SC – The Wofford women's basketball team fell to a buzzer-beating shot on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 51-49. The Terriers now go to 7-4 in SoCon play, sitting in a tie for 3rd with Chattanooga with three regular season games remaining.

Wofford went down early but was able to battle their way back with an 8-2 run. Niyah Lutz was able to score on a put-back after she missed her initial layup. Da'Ja Green sunk a 3-pointer after Jamie Grob kicked it out from the paint. MaryMartha Turner made a three of her own which brought the game back level. The Terriers continued to pour on the pressure after Cairo Booker drained a triple after an Alea Harris offensive rebound. Wofford was able to switch the possession when Booker drew an offensive foul, resulting in a Turner jumper to end the 1st quarter, leading 15-12.

The 2nd quarter was neck and neck until Wofford was able to establish a larger lead. Niyah Lutz made two straight baskets which put the Terriers ahead, and Jamie Grob made a layup to give the team a four-point lead. The squad continued to fire on all cylinders as Da'Ja Green, Cairo Booker, and Lawren Cook all made shots to increase the lead. Booker swished a trey from the corner to make it a 14-1 run by the Terriers, which saw them lead at halftime, 31-18.

Wofford struggled to find any sort of momentum in the 3rd quarter as their one and only basket of the quarter came from Niyah Lutz with 2:30 left. The other four points scored by the Terriers came in the form of free-throws as Da'Ja Green and Alexis Tomlin both made two. Wofford still led going into the 4th quarter, 37-31.

Neither team had much going for them in the tightly contested matchup, but Wofford was able to gather four in a row as Lawren Cook sank two free-throws and Niyah Lutz banked one in from Cairo Booker. The Mocs would go on a 7-0 run to take the lead, but Lilly Hatton nailed a three from the top of the key to give Wofford its lead back. Back-and-forth as the teams traded leads down the stretch, as it came down to the final seven seconds. Da'Ja Green flew by her defender and threw up a layup which missed, but Lilly Hatton collected the rebound and scored with five seconds to go. Chattanooga had one last chance with the ball and made a baseline heave to the corner where they hit the game-winning shot as time expired.

Niyah Lutz led the black and gold with 13 points and also had four rebounds. Da'Ja Green had a team-high four assists while Cairo Booker had a game-high five steals. The Terriers were also able to force Chattanooga into turning the ball over 21 times.

"Our defensive effort was really good, and we battled back from giving up the lead a couple times. I'm really proud of how we held them off the offensive glass, and we didn't allow them any second chance points", said Garrity. "It's disappointing for our seniors, the team is upset for them, and I just wish we could've got it done today."

Wofford will travel to UNCG next Thursday, February 20 to take on the Spartans in another crucial game as the fight for 1st place continues.
