Women’s Basketball Drops Close One at UNCG

Greensboro, NC – The Wofford women's basketball team was unable to come out on the right side in a battle against the UNCG Spartans, falling 49-45 on Thursday night at Fleming Gym.

Da'Ja Green was able to surpass 1,000 career points as she put up a joint team-high 11, along with Niyah Lutz. Lawren Cook and Cairo Booker shared a team-high eight rebounds, and Booker had three steals.

"We had a hard time scoring the ball, but we held them to 49 (points) at their place, so our defense played good enough to win. We had good looks, but wasn't able to convert them", said coach Jimmy Garrity. "Our last two games were tournament type games we've just come up on the short end both times. There are positives to take out of this game and we will prepare for Saturday just like any other game."

Lawren Cook put the team on the board after she got the pass from Da'Ja Green and drove to her left side laying it in. Lilly Hatton tied the game at 4 after her jumper from the right elbow found twine, as it was a low scoring game midway through the first. Out of the media timeout, with the shot clock winding down, Green sank her three to put the Terriers ahead. Alexis Tomlin and Niyah Lutz combined for four more as Wofford stayed in front. Alea Harris put her defender on the floor after a great spin move and floated it in for a 15-12 lead. Tomlin made a 12-footer after Lutz crossed up her man as Wofford led 19-15 at the end of the 1st quarter.

Da'Ja Green added to the Wofford lead as she scored a 3-point play on the first possession. Lawren Cook banked in a 3-pointer to bring the Terriers to a seven-point lead. Both teams would struggle to find the net for the next 3:00, as the score remained 27-20 at the media timeout. Green put herself into double-digits as she made a step-back jumper to extend the lead. UNCG would go on an 8-0 run, all from free-throws, to make it a 29-29 game at halftime.

After the Spartans scored four quick points, the Terriers had to take a timeout to regroup as they trailed 33-29. Cairo Booker finally got the team going as she made a layup to cut the lead to four. Niyah Lutz brought it to a one-possession game after she grabbed an offensive rebound and turned and finished. Once again neither team was able to find any momentum on the offensive side of the ball, as Wofford was only down by five going into the final quarter.

Wofford was able to get the first points of the 4th quarter as Cairo Booker made a deep two. Booker would end Wofford's scoring drought as she made a spinning layup to make it a one-score game, 40-37. Wofford's only points were coming from the free-throw line as they were down 45-40 with 2:13 left. Niyah Lutz was able to get open and was found by Booker as she laid it in to cut it to a three-point lead once again. The Terriers forced a turnover and Niyah Lutz made a corner trey to make the score 47-45 with 26 seconds to go. That was all Wofford was able to string together as they would end up falling 49-45.

The Terriers will look to get back into the win column as they travel to Cullowhee to take on Western Carolina on Saturday at 5:00 pm.
